Algiers – December 2025 – Algeria’s national football team, under the stewardship of coach Vladimir Petkovic, has been drawn into Group J for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, setting the stage for a compelling series of encounters. The draw, held Friday at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., places the Greens alongside reigning champions Argentina, as well as Austria and Jordan—two formidable and technically adept teams.
Petkovic, speaking after the draw, emphasized the competitive nature of the group. “I believe the group we have drawn is highly interesting. Argentina, the reigning champions, is the clear favorite. Austria has also developed remarkably and plays high-quality football. Our key challenges will be against Austria and Jordan, but I am confident that we can achieve results sufficient to progress to the next round, particularly with the new competition system that allows the best third-placed teams to qualify,” the coach affirmed.
The national team delegation, led by FAF President Walid Sadi, expressed determination not to approach the fixtures passively. “Against Argentina, we will not enter the field as victims. We aim to achieve a positive result and view this opening match as crucial preparation for our subsequent encounters with Jordan and Austria,” Petkovic added.
The Greens’ schedule for the group stage is set: they face Argentina on June 16, Jordan on June 22, and conclude the first round against Austria on June 27. With this lineup, Algeria’s path to the knockout stages will demand strategic precision, resilience, and a bold approach against some of the world’s strongest footballing nations.
