ALGIERS- Numerous individuals and organizations from Latin America have expressed their condemnation and rejection of Morocco’s election to the presidency of the United Nations Human Rights Council. They cite Morocco’s track record, filled with human rights violations, persecution of the Sahrawi people, and military occupation of their land, all conducted without regard for international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.

Over thirty social, human rights, and advocacy organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean have jointly voiced their rejection of Morocco’s presidency of the UN Human Rights Council. Among these organizations are the Argentine Association for Human Rights, the Documentation Center for Human Rights in Ecuador, the Chilean Association for Friendship with the Sahrawi Republic, the Colombian Association for Friendship with the Sahrawi People, the Ecuadorian Association for Friendship with the Sahrawi People, the Honduran Association for Friendship with the Sahrawi Republic, the Nicaraguan Association for Solidarity and Friendship with the Sahrawi People, the Panamanian Association for Solidarity with the Sahrawi Cause, the Free Sahara Foundation in Venezuela, the Mexican Association for Friendship with the Sahrawi Republic, the Uruguayan Association for Friendship with the Sahrawi Republic, the Venezuelan Solidarity with Western Sahara Association, among several others.

These organizations represent fifteen countries in the Americas. In their joint statement, they outline the severe violations committed by Morocco against the Sahrawi people, which persist to this day. The statement also emphasizes the ongoing violations against the Moroccan people themselves.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel and Argentine sociologist Atilio Boron have also expressed their condemnation of this unjust election.
