Reda Belhadj Appointed Acting CEO of Sonarem: A Renewed Vision for Algeria’s Mining Renaissance

Algiers – October 2025 – In a move emblematic of Algeria’s ongoing strategy to modernize and energize its mining and hydrocarbons sectors, the Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, presided on Monday over the official installation ceremony of Reda Belhadj as Acting President and Chief Executive Officer of the Sonarem Group, succeeding Belkacem Soltani. The ceremony, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, marked a significant step in the nation’s industrial development policy aimed at revitalizing its mining potential and reinforcing the contribution of mineral resources to economic growth.
In his address, Minister Arkab underscored that this appointment reflects the dynamic reform process currently reshaping Algeria’s energy and mining landscape. He emphasized that Sonarem occupies a central position in this national strategy through its pivotal role in the sustainable valorization and exploitation of Algeria’s vast mineral wealth, the promotion of strategic investments, and the implementation of major structuring projects of national and regional scope.
Highlighting flagship initiatives, Arkab referred to the exploitation of the Gara Djebilet iron deposit in Tindouf, the Tala Hamza–Oued Amizour zinc and lead project in Béjaïa, and the integrated phosphate complex of Bled El Hadba and Oued Kebrit in Tébessa — projects he described as “cornerstones of Algeria’s mining sovereignty and industrial diversification.”
The minister commended Reda Belhadj’s professional trajectory, describing him as a “distinguished executive with a proven record in metallurgy and mining industries,” whose appointment demonstrates the State’s determination to entrust national competencies with strategic responsibilities. Arkab reaffirmed the government’s unwavering support for the new CEO in pursuing the reform and modernization of Sonarem, with the goal of enhancing its operational performance and strengthening its competitiveness both domestically and internationally.
Sonarem, widely regarded as one of Algeria’s leading industrial mining hubs, is tasked with the development, exploitation, and valorization of the nation’s mineral resources. Its activities are supported by strategic partnerships with national and international operators, the integration of cutting-edge technologies across its production chains, and the continuous training and qualification of its workforce through its dedicated subsidiary, Sonarem Formation.
Expressing his gratitude for the confidence placed in him, Reda Belhadj pledged to continue implementing Sonarem’s strategic roadmap under a renewed vision centered on innovation, sustainable resource management, and the creation of value-added partnerships. “Our objective,” he stated, “is to elevate Sonarem into a model of efficiency, sustainability, and industrial leadership that contributes effectively to Algeria’s economic transformation.”
Boasting over 25 years of experience in the steel and mining industries, Belhadj has held several senior management positions within major national enterprises, including the Sider Group, ArcelorMittal Algérie, and Feral. He holds a State Engineer degree in Electronics (Automation specialty) from Badji Mokhtar University in Annaba, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the International Institute of Management (INSIM).
