Ibrahim Boughali Condemns Colonial-Era Interference, Sponsorship of Extremism
Algiers – December 2025 – The Speaker of the People’s National Assembly and President of the Arab Parliamentary Union (APU), Mr. Ibrahim Boughali, has issued a strong and unequivocal condemnation of the continued interference by certain countries with a colonial past in the internal affairs of Arab states, denouncing such practices as a direct assault on sovereignty and international legality.
In an official statement released Tuesday on behalf of the Arab Parliamentary Union, Mr. Boughali described these actions as a “blatant violation of the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the rules of international law,” which affirm respect for state sovereignty and the principle of non-interference in internal affairs. He reiterated the Union’s categorical rejection of all practices that undermine the sovereignty of Arab states and infringe upon the right of their peoples to freely determine their political and developmental choices, without guardianship, tutelage, or diktats imposed by any foreign party.
Mr. Boughali further expressed deep concern over the fact that some of these countries have gone so far as to host extremist and terrorist movements, warning that the provision of political, media, or logistical cover to such groups constitutes a serious breach of international commitments to combat terrorism. Such conduct, he stressed, not only contradicts declared counterterrorism obligations but also gravely undermines the credibility of international partnerships in this field.
Within this context, the President of the Arab Parliamentary Union cautioned that complacency toward these movements, or their instrumentalization as tools of political pressure, opens the door to grave threats against regional and international peace and security. He recalled that the Union has consistently warned against these practices, emphasizing that selective tolerance and double standards in dealing with extremism only fuel instability and erode trust between states.
Mr. Boughali also reaffirmed that the Arab Parliamentary Union has called on all states to strictly respect the principle of sovereignty and to refrain from exploiting human rights issues or democratic slogans as pretexts for interference or the promotion of hostile political agendas. According to him, such misuse empties these universal values of their ethical substance and transforms them into instruments of coercion rather than principles of justice.
Concluding his statement, the President of the Arab Parliamentary Union urged the national parliaments of Arab countries to intensify coordination of their positions and actions on the international stage. This collective effort, he said, is essential to confront these flagrant interferences and to expose the policy of double standards practiced by certain parties toward Arab causes, reaffirming that unity and parliamentary diplomacy remain vital tools in defending Arab sovereignty and safeguarding the legitimate rights of Arab peoples.
