French Interior Minister Slammed for “Unprecedented Brutality” Over Crackdown on Pro-Palestine and Anti-Fascist Groups

As France moves to dissolve “Urgence Palestine” and “La Jeune Garde,” opposition accuses Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau of appeasing the far right and silencing voices of justice amid Zionist atrocities in Gaza.
Algiers, Algeria | May 8th, 2025 — In a wave of escalating political controversy, France’s Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has come under fierce criticism from the leftist opposition for what has been described as “unmatched political brutality” following his decision to initiate the dissolution of two activist groups: Urgence Palestine, a pro-Palestinian humanitarian collective, and La Jeune Garde, a grassroots anti-fascist movement.
Retailleau’s decision comes as part of a wider crackdown on organizations opposing the Zionist entity’s genocidal war on Gaza and standing up to the growing threat of far-right violence within France. The move, justified by vague accusations of “public disorder,” has been denounced by La France Insoumise (France Unbowed) as a gross abuse of state power and an appeasement of the radical right.
“This is not the dissolution of extremist threats,” declared Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France Unbowed. “This is the dissolution of democratic resistance. Neither La Jeune Garde nor Urgence Palestine deserve to be outlawed. If anything, it is this government that has lost its moral legitimacy.”
Speaking before the National Assembly on Tuesday, MP Raphaël Arnault, also of France Unbowed, directly challenged Retailleau, recalling the government’s alarming silence on recent violent attacks by far-right extremists. “The last time we questioned this government, it was about 30 fascists armed with knives attacking a unionist in the streets of Paris while screaming ‘Nazi Paris!’ Yet Minister Retailleau failed to condemn that violence,” Arnault pointed out.
Instead of targeting perpetrators of fascist violence, Arnault added, the government has focused its efforts on shutting down organizations that dare to confront the rising tide of extremism. “You want to dissolve La Jeune Garde simply because they dared to resist these attacks,” he stated, referencing the group’s successful efforts to close nearly ten neo-Nazi headquarters in cities including Lille, Strasbourg, and Lyon.
The deputy went on to expose the Interior Minister’s ties with the far-right National Rally (RN), noting the party’s history of legal entanglements and violent incidents. “The National Rally is the only party involved in at least three terrorism-related cases,” he emphasized. “It includes deputies convicted for gun violence—yet Minister Retailleau shows no concern, as long as the violence comes from the far-right and targets Muslims.”
The most explosive criticism, however, centered on the decision to dissolve Urgence Palestine, a move Arnault described as an attempt to “erase the political and human existence of an entire people.” He stated, “In the midst of a genocidal massacre in Gaza by the Zionist entity, you choose to silence voices calling for justice and peace. What do you call that, if not complicity?”
These developments come amid France’s intensifying efforts to curtail public expressions of solidarity with Palestine, at a time when Zionist forces continue to commit documented atrocities in the besieged Gaza Strip. Critics argue that Retailleau’s crackdown serves a dual purpose: to suppress political dissent and to pander to the far-right bloc ahead of future elections.
