A Lifesaver in Every Home: Algeria’s Red Crescent Leads a National First Aid Revolution

Algiers, Algeria |  In a decisive stride toward a safer, more resilient society, the Algerian Red Crescent (ARC) has launched a nationwide first aid training campaign under the ambitious banner “A Lifesaver in Every Home.” Far from a symbolic gesture, this initiative is a comprehensive program designed to embed lifesaving skills into the very fabric of Algerian households, transforming ordinary citizens into capable first responders.

 

Speaking to APS, ARC communications officer Hana Bettayeb explained that the campaign, initiated at the end of July, seeks to democratize access to first aid knowledge. The objective is bold yet clear: equip every citizen with the capacity to save lives and strengthen a culture of rapid, effective action in emergencies — whether in the home, on the road, or in public spaces.

Summer Risks, Timely Response

The campaign’s timing is no coincidence. With the summer months historically seeing a spike in emergencies — from forest fires and drownings to food poisoning — July and August were deliberately chosen to maximize impact. Through targeted training sessions, participants receive step-by-step guidance to act decisively in the critical first minutes after an incident, bridging the gap before professional help arrives.

From Witness to Rescuer

The program’s structure moves beyond theory. Citizens are trained in both practical and psychological first aid, managing bleeding, handling sudden illness, and offering immediate emotional support to victims. As Bettayeb notes, the aim is to transform the public mindset: from passive witness to active lifesaver.

Nationwide Mobilization

Every ARC wilaya committee is fully engaged, welcoming a growing wave of participants eager to contribute to this citizen-driven safety net. The early response has been nothing short of remarkable, with sessions drawing high turnout and strong community support.

Certification and Civic Pride

To cement this commitment, the ARC awards each trainee a “First Aid Diploma” — not merely a piece of paper, but a badge of civic responsibility. By recognizing these new skills formally, the ARC encourages sustained community engagement and positions first aid competence as a point of national pride.

Backed by vigorous media outreach and active promotion across social platforms, the campaign has already begun to reshape Algeria’s collective approach to emergencies. The vision is ambitious but within reach: a nation where every household shelters not only family, but also a trained guardian of life.
