A Million Trees for a Greener Algeria: The Launch of the Nation’s Largest Reforestation Campaign

Algiers – October 2025 – In an initiative that underscores Algeria’s unwavering commitment to combating climate change and restoring its natural ecosystems, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Fisheries, in coordination with the General Directorate of Forests, has announced the launch of the nation’s largest-ever reforestation campaign. Scheduled for October 25, 2025, the operation will span all 58 wilayas of the country, marking a historic step toward ecological renewal and environmental sustainability.
Organized in partnership with the Green Algeria Association, led by environmental advocate and content creator Fouad Maâla, the campaign aims to plant one million trees in a single day. Species have been carefully selected to suit the distinct climatic and environmental conditions of each region, ensuring long-term resilience and ecological balance.
This unprecedented initiative seeks not only to expand Algeria’s forest cover but also to combat soil erosion and desertification — two major threats to the country’s ecosystem — while fostering a national culture of environmental responsibility and civic engagement, particularly among youth.
Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Maritime Fisheries, Yacine El Mahdi Oualid, emphasized that the campaign transcends the act of planting trees, describing it as a collective pledge to safeguard the nation’s ecological future. “This initiative is more than a symbolic gesture — it is a shared responsibility that unites citizens, institutions, and civil society around a common goal: preserving Algeria’s natural heritage for future generations,” he declared.
He further noted that the true objective extends beyond the numerical target of one million trees, pointing instead to the broader mission of raising awareness and instilling a sense of stewardship toward the environment. The minister expressed his confidence in the Algerian people’s ability to mobilize effectively and rise to this vital environmental challenge.
Under the slogan “Khadra bi idhn Allah – Green, by the Will of God,” the ministry has called upon all public and private institutions, associations, educational establishments, and citizens to take an active role in the campaign’s success.
In conclusion, the Ministry reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at protecting Algeria’s forest resources and promoting sustainable development.
