A National Scandal: Morocco’s Health System in Collapse after Agadir Tragedy

Algiers – September 2025 – Morocco has once again been thrust into the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, as the death of eight pregnant women in the maternity ward of Hassan II Hospital in Agadir triggered an outpouring of grief, rage, and condemnation. What should have been a safe haven for expectant mothers has turned into a chamber of death, exposing the rot at the heart of Morocco’s public health system and amplifying the voices of a population long abandoned to neglect and indifference.

Agadir’s streets erupted in protests as citizens gathered outside what they now bitterly call the “Hospital of Death.” The sight of families and activists denouncing the collapse of medical services reflected not just sorrow over the eight lives lost, but also a broader anger at decades of underinvestment, bureaucratic inertia, and cynical disregard for the basic right to healthcare. The image of women dying while giving life is, to many Moroccans, the ultimate indictment of a state that has failed to uphold the most fundamental social contract with its people.

Demonstrators denounced the catastrophic conditions inside the hospital, where shortages of both essential equipment and medical staff have turned routine treatments into fatal gambles. “The situation has become unbearable,” one protester declared, pointing to the total absence of accountability from the Ministry of Health. Calls echoed for urgent intervention and sweeping reform, but for many, such pleas are nothing new. They have been repeated for years, met with empty promises and cosmetic reforms while the system continued to deteriorate.

The Hassan II Hospital, established in 1967, has not seen a significant expansion or modernization in line with the surging population of southern Morocco. Officials boast of its “multi-functional role” as a local health center, regional hospital, and university institution. In practice, however, it remains trapped in its original infrastructure, overburdened, under-equipped, and hopelessly inadequate for the demands placed upon it. The duality is striking: a facility marketed as a pillar of regional health is, in reality, a symbol of systemic decay.

What happened in Agadir is not an isolated event, but rather the culmination of years of systemic failure. From rural areas where women trek for hours in desperate search of care, to overcrowded urban hospitals where patients die waiting for treatment, Morocco’s health system is collapsing under the weight of corruption, neglect, and political priorities that place prestige projects and regime survival above human life.
