Communication Minister pays tribute to the legacy of a founding voice in Algerian media, hailing his decades-long contribution to the national press and APS

Algiers, Algeria | June 8th, 2025 — The Algerian media community mourns the passing of one of its most respected pioneers. Abderrahmane Mekhlef, a veteran journalist of the Algeria Press Service (APS), passed away on Saturday at the age of 88, leaving behind a monumental legacy in the field of journalism that spanned several decades.
In a heartfelt condolence message, the Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, extended his deepest sympathies to the family of the late Mekhlef, as well as to his colleagues at APS and across the national press.
“Following the death of the distinguished journalist of the Algeria Press Service, Abderrahmane Mekhlef, at the age of 88, I extend my sincere condolences to his family and to the broader APS community. I pray to Almighty God to grant the deceased His boundless mercy, and to bestow patience and solace upon his loved ones,” stated the minister in his message.
The late Abderrahmane Mekhlef was among the vanguard of Algeria’s post-independence journalistic movement. He was part of the first generation of APS journalists, representing the agency as its correspondent in Belgrade during critical years of diplomatic and political evolution. His career then advanced through several key editorial roles within APS, including Editor-in-Chief and Head of the Reporting Service, before concluding his professional journey as a senior political analyst.
Beyond his remarkable tenure at APS, Mekhlef also left his mark on the broader Algerian press. He notably served as Editor-in-Chief of the influential weekly Algérie Actualité, where his analytical acumen and editorial leadership shaped public discourse and journalistic standards for a generation.
Minister Meziane highlighted this exceptional legacy, stressing that Mekhlef’s work stands as a testament to the values of professionalism, integrity, and commitment to truth. “His writings, leadership, and dedication reflect the essence of Algerian journalism at its most honorable,” he noted.
“Inna lillah wa inna ilayhi raji’un — to Allah we belong, and to Him we return,” concluded the minister.
