Algiers, Algeria | May 28th, 2025 — In an ambitious and technically driven shift that aligns with Algeria’s strategic vision for food sovereignty, the A3 Company—a subsidiary of the national energy giant Sonatrach—has significantly expanded its involvement in agricultural development, particularly in the field of strategic crops. Speaking to Dzair Tube, A3’s Technical Director, Hassan Benyahya, detailed the company’s efforts to transform the arid southern regions into hubs of agricultural productivity, underscoring its central role in supporting national food security.

Benyahya confirmed that the company has adopted over 60 operational axes across various provinces with a dedicated focus on cultivating strategic crops, such as cereals and oilseeds. He emphasized that A3’s engagement in agriculture is not a recent initiative. Since 2012, the company has been involved in the creation of agricultural zones in desert areas. However, a decisive turning point occurred in 2021 when A3 officially launched its agricultural division, aiming to significantly expand production surfaces and align its capabilities with national development imperatives.

“Our mission is clear,” Benyahya affirmed. “We are implementing the national program to ensure food security and reduce import dependency. A3 is deploying its full scientific, technical, and operational capacity to contribute meaningfully to this strategic objective.”

A key focus of A3’s operations has been the expansion of irrigated zones across the southern wilayas (provinces), where vast underutilized land and underground water reserves present a unique opportunity. Benyahya explained that the company is actively working to increase yields in vital crops by expanding access to water and land, despite the numerous environmental challenges.

“The desert climate poses considerable challenges, notably high temperatures and strong winds. These are not minor inconveniences—they are factors that directly affect plant health, soil conditions, and harvesting timelines,” he noted. Nevertheless, A3 is not merely adapting; it is innovating.

Recognizing the water scarcity typical of Algeria’s Saharan regions, A3 has implemented advanced irrigation techniques designed to optimize water usage and minimize waste. “We use irrigation-based agriculture and rely very little on rainfall, which is almost negligible in the south. Water management is key,” Benyahya explained, emphasizing the company’s commitment to sustainable practices.

Beyond expansion and irrigation, A3 is investing in the modernization of desert farming through the introduction of smart mechanization. “We aim for continuity, not episodic success,” Benyahya said. “That’s why we are gradually integrating cutting-edge technologies, precision agriculture, and innovative input systems to rationalize production and minimize resource consumption.”

The move by A3 to integrate high-level technical expertise into agriculture echoes a broader governmental push to diversify the national economy and ensure long-term resilience.
