AAPI Leads Strategic Advancement of Algeria’s Gara Djebilet Iron Ore Project
By Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria has taken a decisive step toward consolidating its position in the global iron and steel sector with the ongoing valorization of the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit. On Tuesday, Omar Rekkache, Director General of the Algerian Agency for Investment Promotion (AAPI), chaired a high-level working meeting in Algiers to assess the progress of this flagship project. The session brought together senior executives from the National Research and Mining Exploitation Company (Sonarem), the Tosyali Algeria Group, and representatives of the Directorate General of National Domains, highlighting the project’s national significance and strategic priorities.
The project, operated under the joint venture FTTF, leverages a partnership between Sonarem’s subsidiary, the National Iron and Steel Company (FERAAL), and Tosyali Algeria. With a total investment exceeding USD 750 million, the initiative is designed to process Gara Djebilet’s rich ore reserves using advanced dephosphorization technologies, producing an estimated four million tons of iron concentrate annually. Analysts note that this initiative will not only strengthen Algeria’s domestic steel industry but also significantly reduce dependency on imports, contributing to national industrial security and economic resilience.
Employment generation is a core component of the project’s strategic impact. Forecasts indicate the creation of approximately 760 direct jobs, with additional thousands of indirect employment opportunities expected across ancillary sectors. The economic benefits are projected to extend beyond the Béchar region, bolstering local communities while reinforcing Algeria’s national industrial capacity.
During the meeting, practical implementation challenges were addressed, including land allocation, regulatory authorizations, and fiscal incentives designed to expedite the project’s operational launch. Rekkache reaffirmed AAPI’s commitment to supporting all stages of the project, emphasizing the agency’s role in facilitating administrative procedures, leveraging economic land, and maximizing fiscal and parafiscal advantages to ensure a timely and efficient execution.
