Abdelhafid Ihaddaden University Hub: A Breeding Ground for New Technologies

Algiers, Algeria | May 20, 2024 — In a significant event commemorating National Student Day, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune inaugurated the Abdelhafid Ihaddaden scientific and technological hub in Sidi Abdallah. This state-of-the-art complex is named after Abdelhafid Ihaddaden, the first Algerian and African nuclear physicist, who passed away in 1961. The hub spans 87 hectares and is poised to become a premier center for advanced technological education in Algeria.

A Nexus of Advanced Learning

The hub includes four specialized national schools focused on cutting-edge fields: the National School of Mathematics, the National School of Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies, the National School of Autonomous Systems, and the National School of Artificial Intelligence. Together, these institutions offer 20,000 educational places, aiming to cultivate a new generation of highly skilled professionals in these critical areas.

Complementing the educational facilities, the hub features a central rectorate, auditoriums, a central library, and university residences with a capacity of 11,000 beds. This comprehensive array of facilities underscores Algeria’s dedication to fostering innovation and excellence in higher education and research, particularly in fields crucial to the nation’s economic and technological progress.

President Tebboune highlighted the strategic importance of higher education and scientific research in meeting Algeria’s developmental needs. He noted that substantial investments are being made to cultivate a well-educated elite capable of excelling in a globalized and culturally diverse world. In his inaugural speech, he lauded the university hub as an “important asset” for Algeria and referred to it as the “second breath” of the Algerian university system.

The President expressed pride in the modern infrastructure of the hub, designed to provide an optimal environment for learning and innovation. He emphasized that the surrounding new town is equipped with all essential amenities and services, including residential complexes, advanced technological networks, service enterprises, and commercial spaces, creating a vibrant and supportive community for students and faculty.

Historically, literary disciplines dominated Algerian universities. However, there is now a strategic pivot towards technical, scientific, and mathematical fields to prepare the nation’s future leaders.
