Abdelwahab Bakli… When True Men Depart, the Homeland Remains Witness

ALGIERS – February 21, 2026 – Bodies may depart, but some men never truly leave. They go quietly, yet the traces of their lives remain, bearing witness to a time when they embodied loyalty and became an integral part of a homeland that never forgets its children who honored their pledge.

With the passing of the freedom fighter and former minister Abdelwahab Bakli, Ghardaia lost not just one of its sons, but Algeria lost a man from a generation for whom the nation was never merely a slogan, but a responsibility, a mission, and a destiny.

The funeral was marked by a notable presence of officials and citizens alike, led by Ibrahim Boughali, Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, and representing the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Nasreddine Beba Adoun, alongside Boualem Amrani, former Wali of Ghardaia, who shared a bond of deep respect with the deceased. Local and elected authorities, civil and military officials, representatives of the revolutionary families, the regional secretary-general, traditional and social figures, members of the ‘Alzaba’ circles, and a large gathering of citizens attended, creating a profoundly moving scene that epitomized loyalty to a man who dedicated his life to serving his country.

Bakli was one of those men who carved their path quietly, without fanfare, leaving their mark without pretense. He was not merely a public official who held a ministerial post; he was a witness to pivotal moments in Algeria’s history, a contributor to the consolidation of its institutions, and a believer that serving one’s homeland does not end with the conclusion of formal duties—it continues in thought, in stance, and in voice.

At his funeral, the scene transcended a mere farewell; it became a silent referendum on the value of the man. Faces moved with grief, hearts heavy with sorrow, and the spontaneous presence of attendees conveyed a singular message: a nation preserves its children who have safeguarded it. True stature is not granted by decrees—it is forged through sincerity, affirmed by time, and immortalized in collective memory.

The late Bakli believed that Algeria is greater than any position, and that responsibility is not a privilege, but an ethical duty before it is a role. Thus, even after retirement, he remained present in public affairs—as a thinker, writer, and witness to transformations—driven by a profound sense of belonging and an unwavering conviction that nations are built by the dedication and integrity of their children.

His contributions were not confined to executive functions alone; they extended into intellectual and documentary realms. He left a body of work representing a profound testament to a crucial stage in Algeria’s history, notably including:

  • Local Elections: November 27, 2021

  • The Popular Movement in Algeria

  • From Initiatives and Reflections of a Retiree

  • From the Authentic Blessed Popular Movement to the Dawn of a New Algeria

These works reflect his deep understanding of the political and social transformations Algeria underwent and his commitment to documenting them through the perspective of a statesman who both witnessed and shaped part of the nation’s trajectory—bearing witness with his pen as he had with his actions.

When men of Abdelwahab Bakli’s caliber depart, their passing is not an end but the beginning of another form of presence—presence in memory, in values, and in the silent example that reminds us that Algeria has produced men who lived for it and departed leaving behind that which outlasts life itself: their enduring legacy.

May Almighty Allah have mercy on the deceased, grant him paradise, and inspire patience and solace to his family and loved ones. Algeria, as always, will continue to preserve the names of those who honored their homeland.
