Algiers, Algeria | In a resolute demonstration of state intervention, Acting Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb has placed the regulation of school supply prices at the forefront of Algeria’s social and economic agenda, presiding over a high-level meeting at the Government Palace on Sunday. The initiative, carried out under the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscores the government’s determination to safeguard the purchasing power of Algerian families as the 2025-2026 school year approaches.

A Multisectoral Mobilization for Social Justice

Joined by the Ministers of Interior, Trade (internal and external), senior representatives of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI), and the Council for Economic Renewal (CREA), Ghrieb spearheaded what he described as an “integrated national effort to protect households, guarantee access, and restore confidence in the market.”

The measures discussed include the creation of regional trade fairs, local markets, and distribution points dedicated exclusively to school supplies, designed to counteract inflationary pressures and ensure equitable access across all wilayas.

Equitable Access: From Oran to the Deep South

Concrete steps are already underway. In Oran, nine proximity markets have opened across the wilaya’s nine districts, offering affordable books, bags, and stationery. In Bordj Bou Arreridj, ten additional markets are supplying families with locally produced and imported goods at state-monitored prices. Bouira has launched eight school-supply fairs, while the southern wilayas — including Ouargla, Illizi, Ghardaïa, Adrar, and Bordj Badji Mokhtar — have mobilized dozens of operators to make essential items available at “studied and socially conscious” prices.

More than 120 economic operators are engaged nationwide, bringing together producers, importers, and distributors under the supervision of trade directorates, the National Office of School Publications, and unions of merchants and artisans.

The government’s plan is clear: to spare families the annual ordeal of rising costs, speculative shortages, and inequitable distribution. Parents, long confronted with sudden price spikes and a lack of transparency in the market, are now witnessing a coordinated strategy that provides tangible relief.

By ensuring that every wilaya has access to affordable and abundant supplies, Algeria is reaffirming its social contract: education is not a privilege, but a right safeguarded by the state.

For Acting Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb, this initiative is not a temporary measure but part of a broader strategy of social justice and national cohesion. In his first major meeting as head of the Executive, he stressed that the protection of students and families lies at the heart of Algeria’s development model.

“The education of our children and the well-being of our families are sacred priorities. The government is committed to ensuring that no child, in any wilaya, is deprived of access to essential school supplies due to market speculation or economic disparity,” Ghrieb declared.
