Brussels- In a passionate demonstration held in Brussels, Belgium, activists from the Rif region gathered to demand full independence from Morocco and the immediate release of detainees languishing in the prisons of the Makhzen regime. Led by the indomitable Youba al-Ghadioui, the leader of the struggle for the independence of the Rif, the demonstrators fervently called for the departure of the last occupying Moroccan soldier from their land and the restitution of the Rif to its people without any conditions.
In an interview with Dzair Tube’s correspondent in Belgium, Djamil Djerboua, Youba al-Ghadioui urged the international community to take notice of the Riffians’ plight, which he described as a systematic genocide and ethnic cleansing. He highlighted the need for solidarity with all peoples seeking liberation and emancipation from colonialism, including the heroic Sahrawi people fighting for their legitimate right to independence.
In response to a question concerning the position of Riffian activists on the Sahrawi issue, the Riffian activist expressed unequivocal support for the independence of Western Sahara. He emphasized that the Riffians stand in solidarity with all peoples who seek liberation and emancipation from colonialism, particularly praising the heroic Sahrawi people in their pursuit of independence as their legitimate right. The activist’s unwavering commitment to the cause reflects a deep-rooted belief in justice, self-determination, and the rejection of any form of oppression.
Regarding the appointment of a military attaché to Rabat by the Zionist entity, the opponent of the Makhzen regime raised grave concerns about the situation. He viewed this act as an unprecedented historical precedent and considered it a clear declaration of war by the Makhzen state. The activist firmly condemned the move, stating that it sought the assistance of another entity similar to the brutal and occupying Moroccan regime. In light of these circumstances, he called for the entire region to unite and confront this suspicious alliance, reaffirming their commitment to resist any attempt to undermine the sovereignty and freedom of the people.
Youba al-Ghadioui also took the opportunity to acknowledge and pay tribute to the efforts of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in restoring Algeria to a position of great significance at both international and regional levels. While acknowledging that Algeria had experienced a decline in the past decades, he highlighted the remarkable political acumen of President Tebboune in reclaiming the nation’s historical glory. The spokesman expressed admiration and hope, looking forward to a potential meeting with President Tebboune in the future to witness firsthand the strides made by Algeria under his leadership. This recognition of Algeria’s progress and renewed optimism for the future underscored the activist’s belief in the importance of strong leadership and national pride in shaping the destiny of a nation.
Representing the Rif Struggle Leadership, Aziz Akorouali echoed the call for freedom and independence. He emphasized Algeria’s history of championing freedom and justice and implored the government and people to continue advocating for the weak and marginalized.
Karim El Hayani, another Riffian activist who was previously detained for his involvement in the independence movement, called for the current leaders in Morocco, whom he referred to as “thieves,” to step down from their posts.
He also expressed profound gratitude to Algeria, recognizing it as a nation that fervently supports freedom and those who yearn for it. Standing as the voice of the Riffians, he emphasized their collective pursuit of liberation and independence. Akorouali appealed to Algeria, urging both its government and people to rally behind the cause of vulnerable and resilient rural communities. He urged them to support these marginalized groups with unwavering determination and a steadfast belief in their righteous cause.
Turning his attention to the Sahrawi issue, Akorouali reiterated the solidarity of rural activists with the struggle of the Sahrawi people. He emphatically stressed the indisputable right of Western Sahara to complete independence, empathizing with the reality that the Sahrawi people are still displaced from their ancestral lands. He passionately implored for their return to their rightful home, where their heritage and identity are deeply rooted.
Speaking with unwavering courage, Riffian activist Karim El Hayani directly addressed the Moroccan ruling class, accusing them of being “thieves” who have misused their power and authority. With conviction, he called for their resignation, demanding accountability and justice for the oppressed countryside.
El Hayani fearlessly disclosed the personal price he paid for his activism, revealing that he endured a two-year imprisonment under the Makhzen regime. He shared that his crime was advocating for the independence of rural areas, challenging the status quo that perpetuated injustice and inequality. The regime falsely accused him of obstructing traffic and placing obstacles on the path of progress, using these fabricated charges to inflict suffering on him.
El Hayani’s harrowing account revealed the grim reality he faced during his six months amongst criminals, enduring unimaginable humiliation and torture. His profound suffering not only affected him but also deeply impacted his mother, highlighting the far-reaching consequences of his activism. Despite the pain he endured, his courage and resilience remained unyielding as he continued to stand for what he believed was right—the freedom and empowerment of rural communities in Morocco.
Said Belhireche, a prominent Riffian activist and former detainee, has taken a bold stance by urging the European Union to take decisive action and activate the European decision, while also calling for international pressure on the Moroccan regime. His impassioned plea is aimed at securing the release of all detainees, kidnapped individuals, and innocent journalists who have been unjustly held in captivity.
Belhireche’s appeal doesn’t stop there; he also calls upon the United Nations to step in and exert pressure by imposing immediate sanctions on Morocco. The activist emphasizes that Morocco has persistently disregarded human rights for over two decades, maintaining oppressive policies that have caused immense suffering and injustice to its people.
Citing historical atrocities, Belhireche firmly reminds the world of the heinous crimes perpetrated by the Makhzen, referring to the tragic events that unfolded on July 20, 2017, in Al Hoceima, where numerous lives were lost in the pursuit of justice and freedom. Additionally, he draws attention to the harrowing massacre carried out by Moroccan security forces against African immigrants in Melilla, a stark reminder of the urgent need for change in the country’s approach to human rights.
In light of these disturbing events and ongoing human rights violations, Said Belhireche’s call for collective action serves as a poignant reminder that the international community must unite and stand against injustice, ensuring that the plight of those suffering under oppressive regimes is not forgotten. It is a fervent plea for accountability, justice, and freedom for all those who have been wronged and deprived of their fundamental rights.
Abdelkader al-Hajj, on his part, demanded the end of the Makhzen occupation and colonialism in the Rif region, reiterating the call for the regime to leave the land and its people alone.
In a resolute and impassioned declaration, Riffian activist Mourad Belkadjer vividly recounted the significance of the vigil, marking six years since the tragic assassination of Imad al-Attabi. With unwavering determination, he directed his words towards Mohammed VI, holding him responsible for the senseless death of Imad al-Attabi during the peaceful demonstrations that engulfed Al Hoceima. Undeterred by fear, Belkadjer boldly proclaimed that the days of the accused were inevitably numbered. He emphatically accused Mohammed VI of issuing the fatal orders and unequivocally expressed the collective sentiment: The Riffian community resolutely rejects the presence of such a figure in their homeland. This impassioned plea for justice and accountability resounded with fervor, underscoring the unwavering commitment of those gathered to seek truth and demand change.
The protest in Brussels, led by these resolute activists, sends a powerful message to the international community about the unyielding spirit of the Riffian people and their unwavering pursuit of freedom, justice, and independence from the oppressive Makhzen regime. The world watches as their voices grow louder, demanding a better future for their homeland.
