Advancing Cross-Border Cooperation: Algeria, Tunisia Continue Efforts to Develop,  Promote Border Zones

Algiers, Algeria | January 09th, 2025 — The technical commission tasked with evaluating the progress of the first session of the Algeria-Tunisia Joint Commission for the Development and Promotion of Border Zones has continued its work in Tabarka, Tunisia, on January 8, 2025. This follows the initial session held in Algiers in the previous year, where the two nations laid the foundation for strengthening cooperation in areas critical to border zone development.

A Collaborative Effort Between Algerian and Tunisian Officials

The ongoing session in Tabarka saw a collaborative effort between the members of both delegations, with a focus on presenting the roadmap developed during the first commission session and assessing the implementation of the recommendations related to each Algerian and Tunisian border province. This meeting, which was supervised by senior officials from the ministries of the Interior of both countries, provided a platform for in-depth discussions on the status of border zone development projects.

The meeting was co-chaired by the Director General of Territorial Planning and Attractiveness from Algeria and the Director General of Regional Affairs from Tunisia. Their leadership was key in guiding the discussions and ensuring alignment with the mutual goals outlined in the initial agreements.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation and Promoting Shared Growth

A critical aspect of the discussions was the involvement of the governors (walis) of the border provinces from both Algeria and Tunisia. Their participation underscored the importance of local governance and regional leadership in driving the success of the cross-border initiatives. Both nations have recognized that sustainable development and enhanced cooperation in these zones are vital not only for border security but also for economic growth, cultural exchange, and the strengthening of bilateral ties.

The Algeria-Tunisia Joint Commission for the Development and Promotion of Border Zones was initially established as part of a broader effort to foster cooperation in vital areas such as trade, infrastructure, tourism, and environmental protection. The roadmap, which was developed during the first session in January 2024, sets a clear path for advancing these goals through tangible projects and shared strategies.

Looking Ahead: A Continued Commitment to Joint Progress

The ongoing work of the technical commission is a testament to both Algeria and Tunisia’s unwavering commitment to improving conditions in their border regions. As discussions continue, both countries are focused on optimizing the implementation of their collaborative efforts, ensuring that the roadmap leads to meaningful development, enhanced prosperity, and greater regional integration.

This collaborative initiative also aligns with both nations’ broader strategic vision for reinforcing economic and social ties across borders and positioning their border zones as areas of mutual benefit. As the commission’s work progresses, the impact of these efforts will not only strengthen the relationship between Algeria and Tunisia but will also contribute to the broader stability and growth of the Maghreb region.
