Algiers, Algeria | June 11th, 2024 — Mohamed Arkab, the Minister of Energy and Mines, led a meeting on Tuesday with the National Cancer Prevention and Control Commission, highlighting Algeria’s commitment to enhancing cancer treatment through nuclear medicine applications.
Key Participants and Objectives
The meeting was attended by the President of the National Commission, the Commissioner for Atomic Energy, and six commission members appointed by President Tebboune. The central agenda focused on advancing nuclear technology for medical purposes, particularly in oncology.
“The session emphasized the establishment of a development laboratory for radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals, essential for modern cancer treatment,” the ministry stated in a communiqué.
Formation of a Specialized Working Group
A significant outcome of the meeting was the formation of an intersectoral working group, initiated on April 16, 2023. This group’s mandate is to develop an action plan to expand and enhance the safe and effective use of nuclear techniques in oncology, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine.
This initiative follows directives from President Tebboune during a Council of Ministers meeting on February 5, 2023, which stressed the urgent need to accelerate the development of nuclear applications in healthcare, particularly for cancer treatment. The action plan aims to improve cancer management and expand the use of nuclear medicine in Algeria.
Strategic Goals and Future Prospects
Minister Arkab and the commission’s discussions highlight a strategic commitment to integrating advanced nuclear technologies into Algeria’s healthcare system. This approach aims to improve cancer treatment outcomes and position Algeria as a regional leader in nuclear medicine.
The successful implementation of this plan will likely involve international collaborations, training programs for medical professionals, and significant investments in state-of-the-art medical infrastructure. The development of the radioisotope and radiopharmaceutical laboratory is a pivotal step in this ambitious endeavor, promising to enhance the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities within the country.
By advancing these nuclear medicine initiatives, Algeria aims to significantly improve patient care, reduce cancer mortality rates, and fulfill the aspirations of a healthcare system equipped to meet the most challenging medical needs.
