Afreximbank Backs Algeria’s Energy Vision: Strategic Support for Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and Regional Power Projects

Algiers – September 2025 – In a decisive show of confidence in Algeria’s energy ambitions, Benedict Oramah, President of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), reaffirmed his institution’s readiness to finance and accompany Algeria’s flagship energy initiatives—chief among them the monumental Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline and regional electricity interconnection projects.
Oramah made the announcement during an official audience with Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, attended by Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, Noureddine Yassa, alongside senior officials from the sector.
Algeria’s central role in Africa’s growth
Opening his remarks, Oramah extended gratitude to Algeria and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, praising the nation’s successful hosting of the fourth edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF). He stressed that this achievement underscores Algeria’s pivotal role in propelling economic integration and fostering cross-continental partnerships. According to him, Algeria is no longer merely a participant but a continental hub shaping Africa’s future energy and economic landscape.
Strategic partnerships with Sonatrach
The discussions placed particular focus on expanding cooperation between Afreximbank and Algeria’s energy giants, notably Sonatrach. Oramah highlighted opportunities to jointly finance and market African hydrocarbons, fertilizers, and phosphates, while simultaneously promoting regional integration projects capable of generating local value chains. Such partnerships, he noted, could position Algeria as a springboard for African industrial and energy sovereignty.
Algeria’s vision for sustainable development
Minister Arkab outlined Algeria’s comprehensive energy agenda, ranging from hydrocarbons development to renewable energy programs, electricity transmission, mineral valorization, seawater desalination, and cross-border power interconnections. He emphasized that Algeria’s strategy is not confined to national priorities but is designed to reinforce African–African cooperation. The Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, he stressed, is a cornerstone project that will deliver tangible benefits not only to transit states but to the wider regional economy.
Afreximbank’s financial commitment
Reaffirming his institution’s engagement, Oramah described Algeria’s development model as a beacon for Africa. He assured that Afreximbank stands prepared to mobilize financing for energy, agriculture, and processing industries, underscoring that the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline is of “strategic significance” to Africa’s energy security and sustainable growth. For Oramah, Algeria’s leadership in driving integration and advancing continental infrastructure offers a credible pathway to collective prosperity.
