African Development Bank Praises Algeria’s Development Model and Seeks to Replicate Its Success Across the Continent

Algiers – November 2025 – In a testament to Algeria’s rising influence and pioneering role in Africa’s development landscape, the President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Sidi Ould Tah, declared on Sunday his institution’s intent to draw inspiration from the Algerian model and extend its benefits to African nations striving for structural transformation and sustainable growth. Received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the AfDB chief paid tribute to Algeria’s accomplishments in strategic sectors, particularly housing and seawater desalination—two domains in which Algeria has earned continental recognition for its scale, innovation, and long-term planning.
Speaking after his audience with the Head of State, Ould Tah emphasized that the meeting provided an opportunity to express the Bank’s deep appreciation for Algeria’s substantial progress and the promising prospects it offers for the transfer of expertise across Africa. He highlighted Algeria’s pioneering status in desalination, citing the country’s large-scale infrastructures and advanced programs as a benchmark for African nations seeking water security amid growing climate pressures.
A central point of discussion was the cooperation agenda between Algeria and the AfDB, with particular focus on the strategic railway project linking Laghouat, Ghardaïa and El Meniaa. Described by Ould Tah as “important not only for Algeria, but for Africa,” the railway is poised to become a vital corridor connecting Sahel countries to the Mediterranean, enhancing the flow of goods and passengers, and accelerating regional economic integration. The AfDB president reiterated his institution’s commitment to supporting Algerian-led initiatives that generate high added value and foster sustainable development across the continent.
Beyond the technical and infrastructural dimension, the meeting also carried a strong political and symbolic weight. Ould Tah expressed profound gratitude to President Tebboune for Algeria’s “strong support” of his bid for the AfDB presidency last May, underscoring that this backing was “determining” in securing the leadership of the institution. He noted that the AfDB takes pride in the unwavering support of Algeria—one of its most influential and steadfast partners—further consolidating the country’s strategic role within African financial and development mechanisms.
The AfDB president also stressed the necessity of diffusing the Algerian development experience across Africa. He particularly insisted on the relevance of Algeria’s achievements in housing and water management, two sectors where many African states face acute challenges. Algeria’s model—anchored in rigorous planning, public investment, and a commitment to social welfare—was presented as a replicable blueprint capable of generating tangible progress in various countries across the continent.
