After Vowing to Confront the “Traitor Within,” President Tebboune Presses Ahead with Algeria’s Battle Against the Remnants of the Clan

Algiers – September 2025 – In his periodic meeting with national media, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune delivered words that resonated forcefully: “Let us unite against the traitor within the household.” With this phrase, he pointed directly to the remnants of the corrupt “clan” still striving to destabilize the nation and to tamper with the people’s livelihood and daily needs.
The metaphor of the “traitor within” could not be more explicit. It evokes an individual who lives within the family, sharing their meals and their roof, yet who secretly robs and undermines them from within. By this analogy, the president laid bare the essence of betrayal: these enemies are not foreign aggressors, but insiders—those who plunder the wealth of the country and inflict harm on its citizens under the guise of belonging.
Since assuming office in 2019, Tebboune has placed the eradication of the “clan” at the core of his presidency. Sweeping investigations targeted the symbols of corruption that siphoned off public wealth. High-profile trials led to convictions, while the state undertook the recovery of looted properties and funds. Severe measures were also directed against networks of fuel and essential goods smuggling, practices that had steadily eroded the purchasing power of ordinary Algerians.
The president further underscored institutional reforms, amending laws to tighten oversight of public procurement and empowering judicial and audit authorities with greater prerogatives to ensure that no corrupt actor escapes accountability. Though difficult and painstaking, these measures sent an unmistakable message: the era of impunity in Algeria is over.
Yet president Tebboune himself acknowledged the arduous nature of the struggle. Confronting the “traitor within” is inherently more complex, for these betrayers are not external enemies but individuals who exploit the trust of office and the confidence of the people to serve private interests. For this reason, he stressed that both state and society must stand shoulder to shoulder in this decisive battle.
Today, ordinary Algerians expect this war against the remnants of the clan to yield tangible results: the protection of purchasing power, a fairer distribution of wealth, and a national environment governed by law, equity, and transparency.
The president’s message could not be clearer: external pressures and attacks, however fierce, can be countered and contained. The gravest danger, however, lies within—when sons of the house turn against their own, betraying their nation from the inside. Hence the current imperative: to continue drying up the wellsprings of corruption and to solidify the bond of trust between the Algerian state and its people.
The battle is far from over, but its trajectory is unmistakable. In the “New Algeria,” there will be no refuge for the clan or for its appendages.
