Commentators in regional and international media have noted that multinational corporations such as Chevron and ExxonMobil, heavily invested across the Middle East, could theoretically be exposed should the conflict widen. Other energy service firms, including KBR and SLB, operating in nations like Kuwait, are similarly cited as potential pressure points due to their regional infrastructure.

A particularly sensitive scenario involves Saudi Arabia’s Jafurah gas field, a cornerstone of the kingdom’s energy strategy. Any disruption to such an installation would carry not only symbolic weight but also tangible economic consequences, affecting both Riyadh and global energy stability.

It is crucial to emphasize that these scenarios remain speculative, grounded in public statements and strategic analyses. Direct attacks on regional energy infrastructure would trigger severe consequences: soaring oil and gas prices, global market disruptions, heightened diplomatic tensions, and the risk of broadening the conflict. Iran would also expose itself to significant retaliatory measures.

Politically, Ali Larijani, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, declared on X that Iran would strike the United States and Israel “with unprecedented force,” echoing the hyperbolic rhetoric often employed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. This public posture is a calculated strategy of deterrence, signaling that Tehran possesses leverage extending well beyond conventional military engagement.

The concept of an “economic weapon” is not new in international relations. It can encompass strikes against strategic infrastructure, disruption of energy transit routes, and pressure on commercial or financial flows. Yet the potential for uncontrolled escalation is considerable, given the intricate interconnections of the regional and global economy.

Iran’s true economic leverage in such a confrontation lies not merely in targeting foreign corporations but in controlling critical nodes of the global energy system.

First and foremost is the Strait of Hormuz. Nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes through this strategic chokepoint linking the Gulf to the Indian Ocean. Even partial disruption would immediately send crude prices soaring. Market reactions are often triggered by mere threats rather than actual strikes, making this a potent—but double-edged—instrument, as prolonged closure would also impede Iranian exports and provoke major consumers such as China and India.

A second axis of influence involves indirect pressure on the energy infrastructure of Washington-aligned regional partners, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The 2019 attacks on Abqaiq demonstrated the global market’s vulnerability to targeted strikes. A large-scale repetition could provoke worldwide economic shocks: energy inflation, currency volatility, and stock market panic.

The third lever is asymmetric action: cyberattacks against energy networks, logistical disruptions, and indirect pressure via regional allies. Such measures allow Tehran to maintain strategic influence without immediately crossing the threshold into all-out war.

Nonetheless, these options carry immense risk. Major economic strikes could be perceived by Washington as a strategic escalation warranting a full-scale retaliatory response, potentially plunging the region—and beyond—into an uncontrollable crisis.

In reality, the “economic weapon” functions more effectively as a credible threat than as immediate action. Its true power lies in reminding the world of the fragility of global markets and the precarious balance underpinning energy security, while affirming Iran’s capacity to defend its sovereignty and regional interests.
