Ahmed Attaf Holds High-Level Diplomatic Talks in Istanbul Amid Regional Turmoil

Algeria’s Foreign Minister reinforces the country’s steadfast commitment to peace, regional stability, and stronger South-South partnerships during a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the 51st OIC Council of Foreign Ministers.

Algiers, Algeria | June 22nd, 2025 — On the sidelines of the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held in Istanbul, Algeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, held a series of critical diplomatic meetings aimed at reinforcing Algeria’s unwavering commitment to political solutions, regional de-escalation, and strengthening South-South cooperation.

In a key bilateral encounter with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, Attaf voiced Algeria’s concern over the continuing aggression targeting the Islamic Republic of Iran. The two ministers reviewed the grave implications of these hostilities for the wider Middle East and agreed on the importance of preserving regional stability. Attaf reiterated Algeria’s principled position, emphasizing that as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Algeria remains dedicated to promoting peaceful and lawful approaches based on international legitimacy and the UN Charter. “We must shield the region from further cycles of violence and tragedy,” Attaf stressed.

Still on the sidelines of the OIC meeting, Attaf held another substantive meeting with Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty, where both sides explored avenues for enhancing joint Arab efforts to confront escalating instability. Their talks centered on the repercussions of the attacks on Iran and the growing need to strengthen diplomatic engagement within frameworks such as the Arab League and the OIC to facilitate de-escalation, promote a ceasefire, and support the peaceful resolution of sensitive dossiers, including the Iranian nuclear issue.

In yet another pivotal meeting, Attaf met with Yemen’s Foreign Minister Shayea Mohsen Al-Zindani to discuss the evolving dynamics in Yemen, which remains a humanitarian and political crisis of regional concern. Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s continued support for the sovereignty, unity, and stability of Yemen, and emphasized Algeria’s commitment to contribute—through its Security Council seat—to revitalizing the political peace process and supporting a durable solution for the Yemeni people.

The Algerian top diplomat also held a constructive session with Mauritania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, focusing on bolstering the strategic ties between Algiers and Nouakchott. The two ministers reviewed developments on the agenda of the OIC ministerial meeting and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in accordance with the shared vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The meeting reaffirmed the growing alignment between the two nations on matters of security, trade, and regional integration.

Another significant exchange took place between Attaf and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, where discussions highlighted the broader geopolitical context in Azerbaijan’s regional neighborhood, particularly in light of the aggression facing Iran. The two ministers agreed to deepen economic and diplomatic ties, and announced plans to establish an institutional mechanism that would oversee the development of economic cooperation between Algeria and Azerbaijan. The initiative is expected to pave the way for expanded bilateral investments and joint projects in the near future.

Throughout these back-to-back engagements on the sidelines of the OIC meeting, Ahmed Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s active and balanced diplomacy, grounded in principles of sovereignty, non-interference, and multilateralism.
