Ahmed Attaf Sounds the Alarm on Africa’s Security at 3rd Africa-EU Ministerial Meeting

Algerian Foreign Minister Urges Urgent Revitalization of Africa–Europe Peace Partnership Amid Rising Terrorism and Diplomatic Paralysis

Algiers, Algeria | May 21st, 2025 —  Ahmed Attaf, Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the National Community Abroad, and African Affairs, represented Algeria at the 3rd Joint Africa–European Union Ministerial Meeting, held in Brussels.

The high-level meeting served as a platform to conduct an exhaustive assessment of the implementation of decisions stemming from the 6th Africa–EU Summit, which took place in February 2022. Discussions were structured around four thematic roundtables: “Peace, Security and Governance,” “Multilateralism,” “Prosperity,” and “People, Migration and Mobility.”

Speaking during the “Peace, Security and Governance” session, Minister Attaf highlighted three pressing challenges facing the African continent:

1. The escalating proliferation of tension zones,

2. The transformation of the Sahel-Saharan region into a global epicenter of terrorism, and

3. The ineffectiveness of collective diplomacy in crisis resolution.

Attaf underscored the need for an urgent revitalization of the Africa–Europe partnership in the fields of peace and security, emphasizing that diplomacy must reclaim its role in resolving African crises. He further called for greater support to African Union peace efforts and enhanced investment in development projects, stressing that sustainable peace is inseparable from economic and social progress.

This intervention reaffirmed Algeria’s long-standing diplomatic principle: that African solutions must be found to African problems, and that international partnerships must empower—not replace—regional initiatives.
