Air Algérie Cargo Eyes Robust Growth: Freight Division Projects Up to 12% Surge in 2025

Algiers, Algeria | June 21st, 2025 — Air Algérie Cargo, the freight arm of Algeria’s national airline, is charting a dynamic trajectory for 2025, forecasting a substantial increase in its operations, with growth projected to reach as high as 12%, according to the company’s Commercial Director, Noureddine Rabah Benabbes. The expansion comes in direct alignment with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s strategic directives to boost Algeria’s non-hydrocarbon exports and support economic operators through robust logistical frameworks.

Speaking to the Algerian Press Service (APS), Benabbes emphasized that the company anticipates growth rates between 8% and 12% for the upcoming year—figures that mirror projections by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) for the broader regional market.

This anticipated growth is being driven by heightened demand from Algerian exporters and the mobilization of expanded resources, including cargo aircraft and additional freight infrastructure. The strategic focus lies on fast, secure transport solutions vital for time-sensitive goods such as pharmaceuticals, fresh produce, electronics, and industrial components.

32% Surge in 2024: Record Tonnage and Global Reach

In 2024, Air Algérie Cargo transported approximately 29,000 tonnes of merchandise—a 32% year-on-year increase. The freight comprised industrial goods, spare parts, electronics, agricultural, and agri-food products. These were shipped to destinations across five continents, including Belgium, Italy, Spain, France, Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Canada.

Significantly, the company is also intensifying its footprint on the African continent, identifying Senegal and Mauritania as priority markets within a wider continental strategy. “Africa is a promising frontier, and we are ready to respond to the region’s growing demand for rapid, reliable cargo solutions,” Benabbes stated.

Operational Expansion and Regulatory Breakthroughs

To meet the rising demand, the company continues to operate a Boeing 737-800 BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter) from its parent company and has added a Boeing 737-700 aircraft with a capacity of 16 tonnes. Air Algérie Cargo also retains the flexibility to lease additional aircraft based on market dynamics.

In a move that will further solidify its operational independence, the company is seeking an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from Algeria’s Civil Aviation Authority (Anac), which would authorize it to operate as a fully autonomous freight airline. “This is a game-changing step for us,” Benabbes explained. “It will allow us to manage our capacity independently, tailor our fleet to demand, and expand into new markets with agility.”

Export Incentives and Cost-Sharing Measures

A key enabler of this projected growth is the government-backed Special Fund for the Promotion of Exports (Fspe), which subsidizes 50% of air freight costs. A new mechanism introduced on January 6 allows exporters to pay only half the freight cost upfront, eliminating the previous burden of full payment followed by delayed reimbursements. This reform is expected to significantly enhance export competitiveness and remove logistical barriers for Algerian producers entering international markets.
