Algiers, Algeria | June 14th, 2025 — In a high-profile conference held Saturday in Algiers, Air Algérie formally launched its ecological transition strategy, marking a turning point in the future of Algerian air transport. Held under the theme “Embedding Sustainability in Mindsets for Greener Air Travel,” the event brought together top government officials, national experts, and Air Algérie executives, signaling a unified national push toward environmental reform in aviation.

Attending the event were Transport Minister Saïd Sayoud, Minister of Environment and Quality of Life Nadjiba Djilali, Director General of Customs Major General Abdelhafid Bakhouche, and CEO of Air Algérie Hamza Benhamouda, along with dozens of professionals and stakeholders in the aviation and environmental sectors.

Benhamouda emphasized that environmental commitment is no longer optional but imperative: “Climate change is not a distant threat. It is a present-day crisis. At Air Algérie, sustainability is not a regulatory burden or a passing trend—it is a strategic conviction.” He added: “The environment is our new cruising altitude.”

A Five-Pillar Green Strategy

Air Algérie’s roadmap for sustainability rests on five core pillars:

  1. Fleet Modernization: Investing in a new generation of aircraft that are fuel-efficient and emit fewer pollutants.

  2. Ground Energy Optimization: From maintenance workshops to logistics, energy use will be streamlined for maximum efficiency.

  3. Operational Digitalization: Digital solutions will be expanded to boost traceability, minimize waste, and improve procedural transparency.

  4. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Integration: The company plans to introduce SAF into its operations and aims to support domestic production of biofuels.

  5. Circular Waste Management: Especially within its catering and ground services, Air Algérie intends to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste in line with international best practices.

The CEO stressed that environmental responsibility also enhances flight safety. “Minimizing debris, pollutants, and risks around runways contributes to operational security,” he said. Internal awareness campaigns are now underway across all Air Algérie locations to instill an ecological culture within the organization.

A National Vision Backed by the Government

Minister Saïd Sayoud affirmed the government’s full support for Air Algérie’s transition, noting that “sustainability is no longer a luxury—it is an existential necessity.” He acknowledged that while aviation is a critical driver of economic and tourism development, it also bears a significant environmental cost.

To reconcile growth with climate responsibility, the Ministry of Transport is rolling out a five-axis national aviation reform:

  • Modernize the national fleet with next-generation aircraft.

  • Promote alternative fuels and clean energy.

  • Upgrade airport infrastructure with strict green standards—focusing on natural ventilation, energy control, and eco-waste management.

  • Revise flight navigation protocols to cut travel time and emissions.

  • Educate and train personnel in eco-responsible aviation practices.

Sayoud also reminded attendees that Algeria’s environmental transition is part of its international obligations, particularly under ICAO directives and UN climate frameworks. However, he firmly emphasized: “Reducing carbon emissions must never come at the expense of our citizens’ right to safe, reliable, and accessible air transport.”

As the conference concluded, both Sayoud and Benhamouda called for stronger regional and global collaboration to address the planetary challenge of green aviation. “Let’s turn the slogan ‘Sustainability in Mindsets for a Greener Sky’ into a lived reality,” Benhamouda urged.
