Air Algérie Expands Its African Network with the Inaugural Algiers–N’Djamena Route: A Strategic Step Toward Strengthening Algeria’s Continental Connectivity

Algiers – October 2025 – In a move reflecting Algeria’s growing commitment to deepening its African partnerships, Air Algérie officially inaugurates this Tuesday a new air route connecting Algiers to N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, with a stopover in Douala, Cameroon. The launch of this route marks a major step forward in expanding the national carrier’s continental network and enhancing economic, commercial, and cultural ties between Algeria and its African counterparts.
This strategic expansion follows the direct instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who, during the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025), ordered the opening of a direct flight linking Algeria with Chad. The initiative aligns with the President’s vision to intensify regional connectivity, foster African integration, and strengthen the bonds of friendship between the peoples of both nations.
By establishing the Algiers–N’Djamena–Douala route, Air Algérie not only expands its operational reach but also reaffirms its strategic ambition to become a leading hub for air transport in Africa. The new service will boost passenger mobility across the continent and open new avenues for trade, investment, and cooperation, contributing to Algeria’s aspiration to emerge as a regional air transport leader and logistical gateway between Africa and Europe.
In accordance with international aviation protocols, Air Algérie will benefit from the “Fifth Freedom of the Air”, granting it the right to operate flights between Algiers and N’Djamena via Douala while also transporting passengers between Cameroon and Chad. This operational flexibility will significantly enhance flight frequency and passenger convenience, strengthening Air Algérie’s position in the regional market.
The launch of this new route forms an integral part of Air Algérie’s broader expansion strategy, which aims to consolidate its footprint in Africa while leveraging Algeria’s strategic geographic position and extensive land borders with seven neighboring countries. This geostrategic advantage, combined with the nation’s role as a gateway to Europe and the Sahel region, positions Algeria as a pivotal player in inter-African trade and connectivity.
According to Air Algérie’s CEO Hamza Benhamouda, this approach forms the backbone of the company’s long-term vision to make Air Algérie a continental leader in air transport. He emphasized that the company’s continuous expansion and modernization efforts have already yielded a remarkable 34% growth in passenger traffic between 2019 and 2024, with the upward trend continuing into 2025.
During the first half of 2025, Air Algérie transported 3.9 million passengers, representing an 8.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. On the domestic network alone, over 1.3 million passengers were carried between January and June — an 8.33% rise year-on-year — with nearly 40,000 domestic flights recorded, marking a 2.5% growth in operations.
