Despite manufacturing delays, Algeria’s national airline prepares to modernize its fleet, expand global routes, and lead regional sustainability efforts through a bold strategic transition in aviation.

Algiers, Algeria | June 15th, 2025 — In a major announcement that underscores a transformative phase for Algeria’s aviation sector, Air Algérie CEO Hamza Benhamouda confirmed on Saturday that the airline will begin receiving new aircraft starting September 2025. The delivery, initially expected in June, was delayed due to supply chain disruptions and global manufacturing setbacks largely attributed to the post-COVID aviation crisis.

Speaking on the sidelines of the International Conference on Sustainability in Civil Aviation in Algiers, Benhamouda reaffirmed the airline’s strategic objective to become a regional aviation hub, in line with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s vision. The fleet expansion plan—comprising 15 new aircraft from Boeing and Airbus—is designed to bolster the national carrier’s international competitiveness and operational capacity.

Global Supply Crisis Delays Delivery Timeline

Benhamouda attributed the delay to international bottlenecks affecting both aircraft manufacturers and interior equipment suppliers. Despite the setbacks, the CEO assured that the revised delivery schedule will not derail Air Algérie’s expansion goals.

The delivery plan is expected to unlock a wave of new air routes across Africa, Asia, and Europe throughout 2025 and 2026, with two new lines to Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Guangzhou (China) expected to launch before the end of 2025.

Commitment to Sustainable Fuel and Carbon Reduction

Air Algérie is simultaneously pushing forward with a bold energy transition strategy, announcing plans to begin operating aircraft using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at selected international airports. The use of SAF within Algerian airports, however, will be contingent upon the completion of local production infrastructure, which is currently under development.

Benhamouda stated: “Air Algérie aims to be a continental leader in aviation energy transition. We are no longer operating under business as usual—we are building a new model centered on carbon efficiency, innovation, and long-term ecological responsibility.”

The airline’s five-axis sustainability roadmap includes:

  • Modernizing flight operations for greater energy efficiency

  • Greening its infrastructure and enhancing operational energy performance

  • Embracing digital transformation to reduce waste and boost transparency

  • Integrating sustainable fuel alternatives

  • Implementing circular waste management systems across all service sectors

A Domestic Subsidiary on the Horizon

Benhamouda also revealed plans to launch a new subsidiary dedicated exclusively to domestic air transport, a move aligned with the national transport strategy initiated in 2019. The roadmap for the subsidiary is complete and will be unveiled in the coming weeks. Domestic air traffic has grown by more than 25% between 2019 and 2024, highlighting a renewed focus on regional connectivity.

Geopolitical Tensions and Route Adjustments

Addressing the impact of regional instability, the CEO confirmed the temporary suspension of flights to Amman (Jordan) due to security concerns in the Middle East. However, he clarified that flights to other destinations in the region remain unaffected and will continue as scheduled.

Algeria’s Environmental Leadership Recognized

During the conference, Minister of Environment Nadjiba Djilali praised Air Algérie for being one of the first African airlines to comply with the CORSIA protocol (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation), describing the airline as a model of regional climate responsibility.

Hassan Boulfelfel, Director General of the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), called for urgent investments in SAF production, the modernization of the national fleet, and adherence to international environmental standards. He warned that starting in 2027, non-compliance with global sustainability norms will be subject to financial penalties.

The high-level conference—held under the theme “Sustainability in Mindsets for a Greener Sky”—brought together key government officials, including Minister of Transport Saïd Sayoud, Major General Abdelhafidh Bakhouche, Benhamouda, Djilali, and Boulfelfel, alongside international experts and aviation executives.

Scientific panels and expert-led workshops provided a platform for showcasing innovative solutions and actionable strategies, reinforcing a collective resolve to institutionalize sustainability across all facets of Algerian air transport.
