Air Algérie Unveils Ambitious 2026 Expansion Strategy, Opening New Routes Across Africa, Europe, and Asia

By Dr. Hana Saada

Algeria’s national carrier is entering a decisive phase of strategic expansion, unveiling an ambitious 2026 roadmap that signals a calibrated shift toward continental connectivity and global reach. In a move that reflects both renewed fleet capacity and a broader vision of aviation-led integration, Air Algérie is preparing to launch a series of new international routes spanning Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Speaking at a press briefing following the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the development of a dedicated air freight hub at Algiers International Airport, Chief Executive Officer Hamza Benhamouda outlined a structured expansion plan anchored in the progressive renewal of the airline’s fleet. Central to this strategy is the imminent inauguration—scheduled for mid-June—of a direct route linking Algiers to Libreville, marking a pivotal step in reinforcing Algeria’s presence in Central Africa.

This initiative forms part of a wider continental deployment, with additional routes set to connect Algiers to Luanda, Maputo, Accra, and Lagos within the same year. Through this network densification, Air Algérie is positioning itself as an increasingly assertive actor in intra-African mobility, aligning with broader state ambitions to deepen economic and logistical ties across the continent.

Beyond Africa, the carrier is simultaneously advancing its long-haul and European footprint. Plans are underway to inaugurate a new route to Shanghai during the winter 2026 season, further consolidating Algeria’s connectivity with major Asian economic centers. In parallel, Warsaw is set to join the airline’s European network, reflecting a targeted diversification of destinations in line with evolving passenger flows and market demand. The realization of this expansion, however, remains contingent upon the timely delivery of newly acquired aircraft, underscoring the operational interdependence between fleet modernization and route development.

Complementing these aviation ambitions is a parallel transformation of airport infrastructure. Mokhtar Saïd Mediouni, CEO of the Algiers Airport Services and Infrastructure Management Company, confirmed that Algiers International Airport surpassed 10 million passengers in the previous year, with projections exceeding 11 million in 2026. This upward trajectory is being met with a comprehensive modernization program aimed at enhancing capacity, efficiency, and passenger experience.

Key upgrades include the redevelopment of Terminal 1—designated to accommodate low-cost carriers—as well as the integration of advanced digital solutions such as smart check-in systems, biometric identification pathways, and fully digitized travel procedures. These innovations are designed to streamline passenger processing, reduce waiting times, and elevate service standards to international benchmarks, with implementation expected to commence in the upcoming summer season.

Sustainability and operational safety also feature prominently in this transformation agenda. The introduction of electric buses within airport operations, alongside the deployment of an advanced bird-risk management system, reflects a dual commitment to environmental responsibility and aviation safety. Additional passenger-centric facilities, including sleep pods for transit travelers, further illustrate a shift toward a modern, service-oriented airport model.

Collectively, these developments point to a coherent national strategy aimed at repositioning Algeria as a competitive aviation hub at the crossroads of Africa, Europe, and Asia.
