Algiers, Algeria | June 12th, 2025 —  A major aviation tragedy struck India on Thursday when Air India Flight AI171, en route from Ahmedabad to London, crashed during takeoff at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, located in northwestern India. The ill-fated aircraft was carrying more than 200 passengers, according to official airport sources.

Eyewitnesses and video footage from the scene show thick plumes of black smoke rising from the airport’s tarmac, as firefighters and emergency crews raced against time to extinguish the blaze and locate survivors amid the mangled wreckage.

The Indian Minister of Civil Aviation, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, responded with visible anguish, stating, “I am shocked and devastated by this tragic incident. My thoughts and prayers are with all the souls on board and their families during this heartbreaking moment.” The minister confirmed that emergency response teams and medical units were swiftly deployed to the crash site, with national and local agencies fully mobilized to manage the crisis.

The extent of casualties and injuries remains under investigation, as authorities work to assess the full scope of the disaster. There has been no official confirmation yet on survivors or fatalities.

The incident has plunged the country into mourning and raised pressing concerns about aviation safety, particularly given that India had not witnessed a major air disaster since May 2010, when another Air India flight from Dubai crashed on landing in Mangalore, killing 158 people. In that tragedy, only eight individuals survived by escaping from the wreckage.
