Ait Messaoudene Unveils Touggourt’s Landmark 240-Bed Hospital, Strengthening Healthcare Access in Southern Algeria

Algiers – November 2025 – Touggourt marked a major milestone on Saturday with the inauguration of its brand-new 240-bed hospital, a flagship project personally overseen by Minister of Health Mohamed Seddik Ait Messaoudene. The ceremony, hailed as a transformative moment for the region’s healthcare landscape, underscored the state’s determination to reinforce public health infrastructures across the southern wilayas.
Speaking on-site, Ait Messaoudene highlighted the decisive value this highly equipped facility brings to Touggourt’s health system, insisting that its advanced capabilities position it as a model public hospital designed to meet the expectations and dignity of the citizen. He stressed that the institution, constructed according to modern international standards, possesses the prerequisites to evolve into a full-fledged University Hospital Centre and a regional hub of medical excellence.
The project—covering a vast six-hectare area and financed with more than four billion dinars—reflects, according to the minister, the firm commitment of the country’s highest authorities to the southern regions, long deserving of reinforced healthcare attention and equitable access to specialised services. During his visit, Ait Messaoudene reviewed a detailed presentation on the hospital’s ambitious digital system, aimed at optimizing patient file management and streamlining data-sharing across departments.
Designed across three floors, the new facility houses an intensive care and resuscitation unit with 18 beds, several hospitalization wards, a fully operational surgical block comprising six theatres, hemodialysis services, and state-of-the-art medical imaging and digital radiology departments. It also includes a rehabilitation pavilion, cardiology services, ENT surgery, a pharmacy unit, and all essential administrative and technical structures required for high-level healthcare delivery.
Continuing his field mission, the minister travelled to the commune of Mégarine, where he inspected the construction site of the projected 60-bed hospital. Although the project had been launched, it has suffered delays due to technical and administrative complications related to the study and contractual procedures. Ait Messaoudene pledged to resolve these bottlenecks urgently, in coordination with local authorities, to ensure the project’s completion in accordance with the required standards.
In the same dynamic, the minister inaugurated another 60-bed hospital in the commune of Témacine, situated on the outskirts of the wilaya’s capital. He also inspected the facilities of the new El-Moustakbel polyclinic, emphasizing the essential role of proximity healthcare services in guaranteeing equitable access for citizens, especially in vast and underserved regions. He further underscored the indispensable importance of continuous professional training for medical and paramedical staff, considering its direct impact on the quality, efficiency and humanity of public healthcare.
Responding to concerns raised by elected officials and sector professionals, Ait Messaoudene affirmed that his visit sought to directly assess the health sector’s needs, difficulties and structural gaps in Touggourt, with the aim of ensuring rapid solutions and comprehensive, reliable medical services. His final stop included a rigorous assessment of patient-care conditions at the specialised Mother-and-Child Hospital (EHS-Mère-Enfant), reaffirming the ministry’s unwavering commitment to guaranteeing dignified and modern healthcare for all segments of the population.
