Algeria: 24 Moroccans Arrested in Connection with Illegal Maritime Migration

ALGIERS- In a significant operation, the Regional Gendarmerie Unit in Mostaganem successfully dismantled an international network facilitating illegal maritime migration, with its main orchestrators operating from within Morocco.

According to a statement from the National Gendarmerie, 25 individuals were apprehended during the operation, including 24 Moroccan nationals. They face charges related to the formation of a criminal association, human trafficking, engaging in measures of illegal migration across the sea for financial gain, and providing shelter to foreigners without a license.

The operation yielded the seizure of three boats, two engines, a utility vehicle, two GPS devices, a compass, and a sum of 3725 euros in foreign currency, 87 Moroccan dirhams, and 21800 Algerian dinars in national currency. Additionally, 17 fuel canisters and mobile phones were confiscated.

The detainees will be promptly brought before the relevant judicial authorities once the investigation is concluded, as outlined in the statement. This successful operation demonstrates the commitment to combatting illegal migration networks and upholding the rule of law in the region.
