Algiers, Algeria | July 1st, 2025 — In a diplomatic encounter, the Speaker of Algeria’s Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri, received the Ambassador of the European Union to Algeria, Diego Mellado Pascua, for a courtesy visit that evolved into a robust and candid exchange on key strategic issues. The two officials discussed ways to inject fresh dynamism into the Algeria-EU partnership and recalibrate their 2005 cooperation agreement to reflect current geopolitical realities and Algeria’s modern economic aspirations.

Nasri emphasized the necessity of updating the Algeria-EU Association Agreement, originally signed two decades ago, to better serve the mutual interests of both sides. He stressed that Algeria’s emerging economic landscape, powered by comprehensive reforms and a new investment law, must be matched by an EU approach based on mutual respect, balance, and adaptability.

The Speaker underscored the urgency of implementing flexible mechanisms capable of correcting structural imbalances in the current framework and expanding cooperation into new sectors. He also called for enhanced European investment in Algeria, particularly in the fields of renewable energy, infrastructure, agri-industry, and digital transformation, citing the legal incentives offered under Algeria’s new economic model.

Ambassador Mellado responded affirmatively, reaffirming the EU’s recognition of Algeria as a central and reliable partner in the Mediterranean and North African regions. He praised the depth of political and diplomatic relations between the two sides and conveyed the EU’s readiness to strengthen collaboration, particularly in support of Algeria’s energy transition, food security programs, and sustainable development efforts.

Turning to international affairs, Nasri delivered a resolute call for the European Union to take a principled stand on Gaza, demanding an end to the ongoing humanitarian crisis and urging the EU to back the full recognition of a sovereign Palestinian state, in accordance with international law. Nasri also reiterated Algeria’s unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination, and cautioned against the dangers of a selective approach to international legality.

The Speaker used the occasion to renew Algeria’s call for urgent reform of the United Nations Security Council, advocating for an expansion of its permanent membership and a review of the veto system, to make global governance more inclusive and representative of today’s multipolar world.

Security challenges in the Sahel and Libya were also on the agenda, with both parties highlighting the necessity for permanent dialogue and coordinated action to combat terrorism, organized crime, and instability in the region. Nasri welcomed the EU’s support in these efforts and reaffirmed Algeria’s non-aligned and sovereignty-based foreign policy, which Ambassador Mellado lauded as principled and constructive.

On the parliamentary front, the two sides agreed to revive inter-parliamentary cooperation and re-energize friendship groups between the Algerian Parliament and the European Parliament. Both officials committed to deepening people-to-people ties through parliamentary diplomacy, mutual visits, and joint initiatives.
