Algeria Adopts Clear, Consistent Approach in its Interaction with its African Depth

Aburi (Ghana) – President Abdelmadjid Tebboune affirmed that Algeria’s approach in its interaction with its African depth is clear and consistent, grounded in a multidimensional inclusive approach. Speaking at the 2nd edition of the African Prosperity Dialogues in Aburi (Ghana), his statement was read on Saturday by the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (APN), Brahim Boughali.

President Tebboune stated, “Algeria’s approach in its interaction with its African depth is clear and consistent, based on a multidimensional inclusive approach underpinned by the triad: security, peace, and development. This approach takes into account the real causes of the various threats facing the continent, attests to the sovereignty of countries, and rejects interference in their internal affairs, whatever the pretext.”

He highlighted that Algeria has implemented numerous initiatives and strategies to promote socioeconomic development in Africa through investments in various fields. In 2023, Algeria allocated one billion dollars to development projects in Africa through the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development, established in 2020 to contribute to achieving sustainable development goals in the African continent.

President Tebboune cited vital projects shared with the continent, including the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline transporting gas from Nigeria to Europe via Algeria and Niger, the large El Hamdania port, and the mega Trans-Saharan optic fiber backbone connecting Algeria and Nigeria.

In this context, he mentioned Algeria’s efforts to launch significant economic projects, such as supplying Africa with electricity and enhancing the transport network to African countries. This includes the recent opening of a maritime route to Senegal, the highway linking Algeria to Mauritania, and the Trans-Saharan highway connecting Tunisia, Mali, Niger, Chad, and Nigeria. Algeria has also established direct air routes to several African capitals and opened branches of Algerian banks in several African countries.

President Tebboune recalled laws and legislations enacted in this framework, including Law No. 15-22, promulgated on July 20, 2022, which sets the rules governing free zones, aiming to encourage and facilitate trade through border crossings. Additionally, Algeria signed the Agreement on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) in March 2018 and the three protocols on the trade of goods, trade in services, and dispute settlement, along with the law ratifying the agreement establishing the African free zone.

Beyond the economic aspect, President Tebboune emphasized Algeria’s commitment to supporting coordination and cooperation with African countries at all levels to establish security, preserve peace, and ensure stability. Algeria plays a central role in the fight against terrorism, violent extremism, and organized crime, hosting the African Centre for Studies and Research on Terrorism and participating in the Joint Operational Police Cooperation Mechanism of the African Union. Algeria also contributes to the training of imams in various African countries to combat violent extremism and promote moderate Islam.

President Tebboune concluded by underlining Algeria’s continuous support for just causes worldwide, especially the Palestinian and Sahrawi issues. Algeria believes in a politically stable Africa, leading and prosperous in terms of economics and development.
