Algeria Advances Economic Diversification with Strategic UK Agrifood Partnership
By Dr. Hana Saada
In a concerted effort to broaden its economic exchanges beyond hydrocarbons, Algeria hosted a high-level meeting between Algerian and British business operators under the banner “Algeria Agrifood Business: Creating Links with British Partners.” The event, organized by the Algerian Embassy in the United Kingdom, took place alongside the International Food & Drink Event (IFE) in London from March 30 to April 1 and attracted nearly 150 professionals from the agrifood sector.
The gathering was attended by the UK Prime Minister’s new trade envoy to Algeria, Yasmin Qureshi, alongside senior British trade officials, including Chris Durkin and Alan Rides, President and Executive Director of the British Chamber of Commerce, Rita Massoud, Acting Secretary-General of the Arab-British Chamber, James Murray, organizer of the IFE, and representatives from the UK Department of Trade and Foreign Affairs. Their presence underscores a growing recognition of Algeria’s economic potential and signals a shared commitment to strengthen bilateral trade relations.
Ambassador Nourredine Yazid highlighted the centrality of the agricultural and agrifood sectors in Algeria’s ambitious strategy to modernize and diversify its economy. Representing approximately 19% of the non-hydrocarbon GDP, these sectors have become pivotal to national wealth creation and export development. He emphasized that structural reforms, including the expansion of irrigated lands, optimized water management, and the development of AgriTech, have enhanced the international competitiveness of Algerian products.
The event offered British partners direct engagement with local producers, enabling the identification of high-potential areas for collaboration and the establishment of sustainable business networks. Ambassador Yazid underlined the UK’s position as a trusted partner and a recognized center of excellence in research, innovation, and advanced agricultural technologies. The complementarity of Algerian and British capacities opens significant avenues for joint projects capable of generating value and employment.
Highlighting the cooperative momentum, Ms. Qureshi praised the quality of Algerian products and reaffirmed her commitment to facilitating trade relations and supporting Algeria’s economic diversification agenda. She noted particular interest in sectors including agriculture, industry, tourism, and mining, signaling readiness for institutional and practical support to enhance bilateral exchanges.
Cementing the framework for future collaboration, the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CACI), represented by Director General Chakib Kouidri, and the London Chamber of Commerce, led by Executive Director Alan Rides, signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize a strategic partnership. Participating Algerian public and private companies showcased high-quality national products, ranging from fresh produce to dates and olive oil, securing export contracts that reflect the rapid evolution of the country’s agrifood industry.
