Algeria, AFC Discuss Strategic Energy and Mining Investment Push Across Africa

Minister Mohamed Arkab Outlines Algeria’s Vision for Regional Energy Security and Infrastructure-Led Growth During High-Level Talks with African Finance Corporation CEO

Algiers, Algeria | June 10th, 2025 — In a decisive step toward bolstering Algeria’s role in Africa’s energy and mining future, Minister of State for Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, held a high-level meeting with the President and CEO of the African Finance Corporation (AFC), Samaila Zubairu, to explore strategic investment partnerships in Algeria’s energy, mining, and renewable sectors. The meeting, which took place in the presence of Secretary of State for Mines Karima Tafer, Secretary of State for Renewable Energies, as well as senior officials from the Ministry, Sonatrach, and Sonarem, focused on unlocking financing pathways for large-scale infrastructure and industrial projects led by Algeria both domestically and across the continent.

At the heart of the discussion were investment opportunities and enhanced collaboration with AFC, one of Africa’s leading multilateral financial institutions specializing in infrastructure financing. The talks centered on mega-projects in petrochemicals, renewable energy, mining, and cross-border electricity interconnection initiatives, which are critical to realizing a sustainable, integrated, and energy-secure Africa.

Minister Arkab provided a comprehensive briefing on Algeria’s national development strategy for the energy, mining, and renewable energy sectors, emphasizing the immense resource potential and geostrategic positioning of Algeria as a regional energy hub. He underscored Algeria’s commitment to strengthening regional energy security, accelerating the energy transition, and fostering Africa-wide economic resilience in line with sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Arkab also highlighted Algeria’s leading role in transcontinental projects, stressing that AFC’s participation could serve as a catalytic driver for transformative industrialization and capital diversification in Algeria. He reiterated Algeria’s openness to robust partnerships that are rooted in sovereignty, mutual benefit, and long-term development impact.

In response, AFC CEO Samaila Zubairu expressed the Corporation’s keen interest in supporting Algeria’s energy and mining ambitions, describing Algeria as a strategic partner in realizing the Corporation’s vision of building a fully integrated, economically independent Africa. He confirmed AFC’s readiness to mobilize long-term capital to co-finance projects in partnership with Algerian institutions and emphasized the AFC’s dedication to contributing to Pan-African economic integration and green industrialization.
