Algeria and Italy Deepen Strategic Energy Ties: Arkab Holds High-Level Talks with Edison CEO in Sorrento

Discussions Highlight Major Prospects in Natural Gas, Green Hydrogen, Renewable Energy, and the “Southern Corridor” for Energy Export

Algiers, Algeria | May 16th, 2025 —  On the sidelines of the 4th edition of the international forum “Verso Sud: The European Strategy for a New Geopolitical, Economic, and Socio-Cultural Era in the Mediterranean Region,” held in the Italian city of Sorrento, Algeria’s Minister of State for Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, held bilateral discussions on Friday, May 16, 2025, with Nicola Monti, CEO of the Italian energy giant Edison.

The meeting, attended by the CEO of Sonatrach, Rachid Hachichi, the CEO of Sonelgaz, Mourad Adjal, Algeria’s Ambassador to Italy, and the Consul General of Algeria in Naples, alongside senior officials from the energy sector, reflects Algeria’s unwavering commitment to consolidating its strategic partnerships in the Euro-Mediterranean energy sphere.

The talks focused on the current state of cooperation between Sonatrach and Edison and explored avenues for expansion through the implementation of new large-scale structural projects. Particular emphasis was placed on the development of natural gas marketing mechanisms, the acceleration of green hydrogen initiatives, and the extension of cooperation in energy infrastructure.

Equally important, the meeting addressed the deepening of collaboration between Sonelgaz and Edison, notably in the domains of electric transportation systems, industrial equipment manufacturing, and renewable energy deployment. The two sides also discussed the highly ambitious project of direct electric interconnection between Algeria and Italy, which would leverage Algeria’s vast renewable potential to bolster its position as a reliable energy hub in the Mediterranean basin.

Minister Arkab underlined the strategic nature of Algerian-Italian energy relations, praising the strong synergies between Algerian companies—particularly Sonatrach and Sonelgaz—and their Italian counterparts. He reiterated Algeria’s readiness to position itself at the heart of Europe’s energy diversification strategy.

A key component of the discussions was the promising “Southern Corridor” project for hydrogen export, a pivotal element in the global energy transition. Talks also extended to training, expertise exchange, and technology transfer—pillars of sustainable industrial development and long-term cooperation.

The two parties further exchanged views on enhancing South-South cooperation in the framework of the Mattei Plan, especially in supporting African nations in developing their natural resources and modernizing their infrastructure. This aligns with shared objectives of diversifying supply chains, ensuring energy security, and promoting inclusive and sustainable development across the continent.

Both sides expressed satisfaction with the high level of mutual trust and understanding that characterizes the partnership between Sonatrach and Edison, reaffirming their joint commitment to expanding the scope of cooperation and reinforcing energy ties between Algeria and Italy.
