Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and Austrian Counterpart Discuss Expanding Bilateral Cooperation and Reviving Diplomacy in Global Crisis Resolution

Algiers, Algeria | June 18th, 2025 — Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, received a phone call on Wednesday from Beate Meinl-Reisinger, Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs. The exchange marked a renewed affirmation of the growing strategic partnership between Algeria and Austria, grounded in mutual interests and a shared vision for multilateral diplomacy.

During their discussion, the two ministers reviewed the current status and promising prospects of bilateral relations, voicing satisfaction over the positive outcomes already achieved in traditional sectors of cooperation — most notably railway infrastructure and energy, including both conventional resources and renewable energies, such as green hydrogen, which is increasingly becoming a cornerstone of the two countries’ sustainable development agendas.

The conversation also addressed broadening the cooperation into new strategic domains, including mechanical industries and water resource management, fields identified as critical to national development efforts in both nations.

In addition to economic and industrial ties, the ministers conducted an in-depth exchange of views on regional and global security challenges, particularly the deteriorating situations in the Sahel-Saharan region, the Middle East, and the wider international stage.

In this context, both sides underscored the urgent need to reinvigorate diplomacy as a tool for conflict resolution and crisis management, affirming their commitment to closer coordination, mutual consultation, and experience-sharing. Special emphasis was placed on cooperation in light of Austria’s upcoming term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, with Algeria pledging support in fostering effective multilateral action.
