Algeria, Belgium Pledge to Deepen Strategic Cooperation in Energy, Mining, and Renewables

Algiers, Algeria– Tuesday, July 15, 2025 | Algeria and Belgium have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation in the sectors of energy, mining, and renewable energies during a high-level meeting held on Monday in Algiers. The meeting brought together Algeria’s Minister of State for Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, and Maxime Prévot, Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Development Cooperation.

The encounter, which took place in the presence of Belgium’s ambassador to Algeria, Secretary of State for Mines Karima Tafer, Secretary of State for Renewable Energies Noureddine Yassaâ, and Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi, underscored both nations’ desire to consolidate a long-standing partnership and expand it across key strategic sectors.

Exploring high-impact synergies in hydrocarbons, hydrogen, and strategic minerals

The two sides conducted a comprehensive review of existing cooperation and outlined new avenues for joint ventures and knowledge exchange. A particular emphasis was placed on hydrocarbons, petrochemicals, energy transformation industries, and mineral processing, alongside emerging technologies including solar photovoltaics, wind energy, and green hydrogen.

The discussions addressed the integration of advanced technologies, development of smart grids, energy storage solutions, and the importance of vocational training. Arkab presented Algeria’s roadmap for a sustainable energy transition, which includes ongoing projects in hydrocarbon exploration, electricity production, water desalination, and the deployment of renewables, particularly green hydrogen.

In the mining sector, both parties explored opportunities for joint initiatives in the surveying, exploration, and transformation of Algeria’s mineral wealth. The dialogue centered on rare earths and critical raw materials essential to high-tech and green industries—such as metals required in steel manufacturing, battery production, and clean technologies.

Toward a comprehensive Algerian-Belgian partnership built on mutual interest

Minister Arkab described the meeting as a reflection of the “political will at the highest level” to raise Algerian-Belgian ties to a “comprehensive and mutually beneficial partnership.” He underlined Belgium’s longstanding expertise in energy and mining innovation and the importance of ensuring technological transfer to foster strong domestic value chains in Algeria.

Vice Prime Minister Maxime Prévot expressed satisfaction with the “quality and depth” of bilateral relations and reiterated Belgium’s firm intention to deepen cooperation in economic and energy domains. He stressed the relevance of expanding collaborative efforts to additional priority sectors, highlighting the keen interest of Belgian companies in investing and partnering with Algerian stakeholders, particularly in mining and energy transformation.

Both parties agreed to maintain momentum through the establishment of concrete projects, high-level exchanges, and institutional frameworks that support long-term, mutually advantageous development.
