Algeria-Brazil Economic Ties Deepen: Non-Hydrocarbon Exports Surge as Landmark Livestock Deal Sealed

Algiers, Algeria | Algeria and Brazil have entered a new phase in their long-standing partnership, marking a significant step in South-South cooperation. Beyond their historic ties rooted in energy and meat trade, the two nations are now diversifying their economic exchange with unprecedented momentum.

On 19 August 2025, both governments announced the conclusion of sanitary negotiations allowing Algeria, for the first time, to import live sheep from Brazil. This agreement, hailed by Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture as a “major commercial opportunity,” reflects a strategic effort to expand trade into new agricultural domains. Algeria had previously opened its markets to fresh and frozen Brazilian meat, but until now, live animal imports were limited to Romania and Spain — reaching one million heads during last year’s Eid al-Adha.

Diversification Beyond Oil

The livestock accord signals a structural shift in Algeria-Brazil trade relations, moving away from their traditional oil-meat axis toward a broader spectrum of agricultural and industrial goods. This transformation aligns with both nations’ shared ambition to consolidate a sustainable development vision and reinforce economic diplomacy under the South-South framework.

Algerian Exports on the Rise

Recent data highlight Algeria’s growing footprint in the Brazilian market. Between January and April 2025, Algerian fertilizer exports reached USD 54.6 million, marking a 44.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Fertilizers have now become Algeria’s second-largest export to Brazil after oil, underscoring the country’s gradual diversification strategy.

Other non-hydrocarbon products — including salt, sulfur, and construction materials — also surged by 175.8%, demonstrating Algeria’s rising competitiveness in niche segments of the Brazilian market.

Meat Trade Reconfigured

Algeria’s demand for Brazilian beef has grown at an extraordinary pace. In the first two months of 2025 alone, imports hit 15,900 tons, a leap of 199% in volume and 254% in value compared to 2024. This exponential rise propelled Algeria from the 40th to the 4th largest global importer of Brazilian beef, and the leading importer in the Arab world.

Although total bilateral trade volume recorded a modest decline of 21.9% in the same reporting period, the composition of exchanges is shifting decisively. Non-hydrocarbon exports are not only gaining ground but are reshaping Algeria’s profile as a trade partner.
