Algeria Emerges as Canada’s Leading African Partner Amid Strong Diplomatic and Parliamentary Engagement

Algiers, Algeria | June 18th, 2025 — During an official meeting with the Canadian Ambassador to Algeria, H.E. Robin Lynn Wettlaufer, the Speaker of the People’s National Assembly (APN), Mr. Brahim Boughali, expressed Algeria’s firm will to elevate its strategic relations with Canada, emphasizing that Algeria considers Canada a reliable partner and its foremost ally on the African continent.

“I have great appreciation for the historic relations uniting our two countries,” Boughali said. “It is crucial that we work together to reinforce these ties, particularly in the political, economic, and parliamentary fields. Strengthening inter-parliamentary relations will allow both our nations to build mutual understanding and showcase Algeria’s true image and accomplishments.”

Boughali commended Canada’s principled foreign policy, stating: “We value Canada’s position in the Middle East, especially its enduring support for the Palestinian cause and its balanced approach to the issue of Western Sahara. Such positions reaffirm Canada as a partner of integrity and justice.”

He went on to highlight the importance of security cooperation, noting, “Canada has been a steadfast ally in the fight against terrorism. Our bilateral cooperation in this area continues to reflect the strength and maturity of our relations.”

For her part, Ambassador Wettlaufer expressed Canada’s admiration for Algeria’s international leadership. “Algeria plays a pivotal role as a member of the United Nations and the Security Council in promoting peace and international stability,” she stated. “It is no surprise that Algeria remains Canada’s number one partner in Africa.”

She also stressed the need to expand cooperation in diverse sectors and paid tribute to the Algerian community in Canada, describing it as “a vital force in Canada’s socioeconomic development and a powerful bridge linking our two nations.”

Boughali concluded the meeting by calling for the intensification of parliamentary diplomacy and increased investment and cultural exchange, affirming: “The future of Algerian-Canadian relations lies in openness, trust, and shared responsibility for peace and progress.”
