Algiers, Algeria | June 11th, 2025 — In a significant gesture underscoring the vitality of Algerian-Canadian relations, the Speaker of the Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri, received Canadian Ambassador to Algeria, Robin Lynn Wettlaufer, on Wednesday in Algiers. This courtesy visit served not merely as a reaffirmation of longstanding diplomatic ties between the two nations but also as a forward-looking exchange aimed at charting new horizons for cooperation.

The encounter took place in a geopolitical context marked by instability and shifting global dynamics. It offered an opportunity for both sides to stress their mutual interest in building a stronger, multidimensional partnership grounded in historical friendship and shared values of peace, development, and multilateralism.

Elevating Economic Cooperation and Trade Exchange

Azouz Nasri emphasized Algeria’s ambition to deepen its strategic cooperation with Canada, particularly in the economic sphere. He advocated for a robust, mutually beneficial partnership that capitalizes on the existing goodwill and political trust between the two countries. Nasri pointed to Algeria’s newly adopted investment law and a reformed, “stable and attractive” business climate as critical incentives for foreign investors, including Canadian enterprises.

Highlighting the national economic renaissance driven by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s reform agenda, Nasri stressed the need for international partners to accompany Algeria’s transformation through concrete investment and technology exchange, especially in sectors such as energy, agriculture, health, renewable energy, and higher education.

Human Bonds and the Power of the Diaspora

Beyond trade and diplomacy, Nasri touched on the vibrant human dimension that binds Algeria and Canada. The presence of a dynamic and well-integrated Algerian community in Canada was acknowledged as a key asset in strengthening people-to-people ties and fostering cultural diplomacy. He described the diaspora as a living bridge capable of energizing cooperation between institutions and businesses on both sides.

Shared Concerns on Global Governance and Human Rights

The meeting also served as a platform to address critical international and regional concerns. Nasri voiced Algeria’s deep dismay over the persistent dysfunction of the United Nations Security Council, calling for urgent institutional reform to render it more inclusive, democratic, and responsive to the current global landscape.

In no uncertain terms, Nasri condemned what he described as a “genocide” unfolding in Ghaza and the occupied Palestinian territories. He called on the international community to take decisive action to stop the aggression, criminalize the Zionist occupation, and uphold the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state with El Qods (Jerusalem) as its capital.

Similarly, he turned the spotlight on the long-standing suffering of the Sahrawi people under Moroccan occupation, describing their plight as a “tragedy” that demands immediate and effective mobilization from the international community. Nasri reiterated Algeria’s unwavering commitment to decolonization in Africa and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence.

Canada Reaffirms Commitment to a Balanced, Multilateral Global Order

For her part, Ambassador Robin Lynn Wettlaufer lauded the “quality and depth” of the bilateral relations, emphasizing the richness of the “shared capital” uniting Algeria and Canada. She described it as a solid foundation upon which both nations can further strengthen cooperation in pursuit of international peace and stability.

Wettlaufer recognized Algeria’s current role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council as a valuable contribution to multilateral diplomacy. She underscored the importance of joint efforts to revitalize bilateral relations through an inclusive, win-win partnership tailored to the capacities and priorities of each nation.

In a clear expression of Canada’s ethical and diplomatic posture, she reiterated her government’s firm stance on key international crises. She voiced Canada’s strong opposition to the ongoing aggression in Ghaza and reaffirmed its support for a just and legal resolution to the question of Western Sahara, in accordance with international law and UN resolutions.
