Algeria Celebrates World Biodiversity Day with Strong Commitment to Coastal Protection

Environment Minister Nadjiba Djilali Oversees Closing Ceremony of Coastal Biodiversity Project and Underwater Photography Awards at Moufdi Zakaria Palace of Culture

Algiers, Algeria | May 26th, 2025 —  As part of the Ministry of Environment and Quality of Life’s ongoing strategy to promote ecological stewardship, a high-level ceremony was held to mark World Biodiversity Day under the theme of protecting Algeria’s coastal ecosystems.

The event was presided over by Minister of Environment and Quality of Life, Ms. Nadjiba Djilali, with the distinguished participation of Minister of Culture and Arts, Mr. Zouheir Bellou, and Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Ms. Houria Meddahi.

Held at the Moufdi Zakaria Palace of Culture, the ceremony served as the official closing of the national project entitled “Protection of the Environment and Biodiversity of the Algerian Coast,” a landmark initiative aimed at preserving the country’s fragile marine and coastal ecosystems in the face of mounting environmental challenges.

The occasion also featured the announcement of winners of the National Underwater Photography Competition, which showcased breathtaking images capturing the hidden beauty of Algeria’s underwater biodiversity. The competition was launched as a creative means of raising awareness about marine conservation and the ecological richness of Algeria’s coastal zones.
