Algiers – September 2025 – Algeria and China have once again reaffirmed the strategic depth of their partnership, as Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received the Chinese Ambassador to Algeria, Dong Guangli, at the ministry’s headquarters. The high-level meeting underscored the determination of both nations to elevate bilateral cooperation in hydrocarbons and mining, sectors deemed vital for their respective economic strategies.
The discussions, held in the presence of Secretary of State for Mines, Karima Bakir Tafer, focused on evaluating the current state of collaboration and mapping future avenues for joint ventures. Both parties emphasized the privileged, historical nature of Algeria–China relations and celebrated the strength of their strategic partnership, particularly in the fields of energy and resource exploitation.
A focal point of the talks was the “fruitful cooperation” between Algeria’s Sonatrach and China’s Sinopec. The two energy giants had recently signed a landmark agreement on July 20, 2025, establishing a new framework for collaboration. This accord paves the way for upcoming contracts covering exploration, production, and advanced technical and technological services. Minister Arkab further encouraged Chinese companies to actively participate in Algeria’s forthcoming hydrocarbons tenders, highlighting their renowned expertise and advanced capabilities as crucial assets in meeting Algeria’s ambitious energy goals.
The mining sector, described as a cornerstone of Algeria’s industrial future, also featured prominently in the meeting. Projects currently underway—including the Gara Djebilet iron mine, the Bled El Hadba phosphate deposit, and zinc and lead operations in Bejaïa—were reviewed as central pillars of Algeria’s economic diversification strategy. Arkab stressed the immense potential of Algeria’s mineral wealth, ranging from gold and manganese to barite and rare earths. He invited Chinese firms to seize the opportunity provided by Algeria’s new investment climate and reformed legal framework, which guarantees security, transparency, and profitability for mutually beneficial ventures.
Ambassador Dong Guangli praised the depth and dynamism of Algeria–China cooperation, noting with satisfaction the success achieved by companies from both sides. Expressing confidence in the future trajectory of this partnership, he affirmed that upcoming joint projects would not only consolidate but expand the strategic relations between Algiers and Beijing, reflecting a shared vision of sustainable development, economic sovereignty, and international solidarity.
