ALGIERS- The Minister of Energy and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, held talks on Thursday with a delegation from the China National Nuclear Industry Corporation (CNNC), led by its CEO, Yu Jianfeng.
According to a statement from the ministry, the discussions centered on the state of cooperation between the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) and the Chinese company CNNC in the field of nuclear energy, its peaceful applications, and the prospects for its development.
The parties also delved into issues related to the expansion of cooperation, particularly in the use of nuclear technology in medicine, diagnostic imaging procedures, and the production of radioactive isotopes in Algeria. These isotopes find applications in various sectors, including industry, agriculture, and medicine, specifically in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, especially cancerous tumors. This aligns with Algeria’s strategic direction to invest in nuclear technologies and their medical applications.
It was agreed to establish a working group comprising experts from the Atomic Energy Commission and the Chinese company to formulate a clearly defined action plan for cooperation. The plan will outline the utilization of nuclear technology in Algeria, focusing on science, technology, and nuclear applications in medicine and cancer treatment, while identifying national needs in this field.
Additionally, the discussions covered opportunities for exchanging experiences in areas of mutual interest, reflecting the commitment of both Algeria and China to fostering collaboration in the nuclear sector for peaceful and beneficial purposes.
