Algiers – December 2025 – In a development for Algeria’s space ambitions, Algeria Télécoms Satellite (ATS) and the Algerian Space Agency (ASAL) signed two memoranda of cooperation on Sunday in Algiers with the Chinese company Geespace, signaling a strategic leap in the nation’s technological and industrial capabilities in satellite and space technologies.
The signing ceremony took place at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center during the “African Telecommunications Day,” held alongside the 4th African Startups Conference, and was attended by Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki and Chinese Ambassador to Algeria Dong Guangli. The event highlighted Algeria’s commitment to establishing itself as a regional leader in space technology through targeted industrial partnerships and knowledge transfer.
The first memorandum, endorsed by ATS Director-General Toufik Hentabli and Geespace CEO Wang Yang, focuses on the development, manufacturing, and deployment of IT devices connected to satellites, a move designed to strengthen Algeria’s national capabilities in space applications. Central to this agreement is the establishment of a domestic satellite manufacturing facility, creating the industrial base necessary to support both national and regional satellite programs.
The second memorandum, signed by ASAL Director-General Azzedine Oussedik alongside Geespace leadership, aims to reinforce cooperation in the production of low-orbit satellites. This initiative is expected to position Algeria as a continental leader in the space sector, fostering innovation, sustainable local resource utilization, and advanced technological applications.
Geespace, a subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, brings extensive expertise in space and satellite technologies, marking this collaboration as a strategic platform for Algeria to consolidate its capabilities, enhance technological sovereignty, and advance its regional influence in the rapidly evolving aerospace domain.
