Algiers, Algeria | October 7th, 2024 — On Sunday in Algiers, Ahmed Badani, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, reaffirmed the sector’s unwavering commitment to improving the socio-professional conditions of fishermen. This declaration was made during a meeting with Ali Daoudi, the president of the Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Oran province, who raised critical concerns and proposed viable solutions aimed at advancing fishing activities in the region.

Implementing Presidential Instructions

This meeting is part of a series of regular discussions held with provincial chamber presidents and representatives from the fishing community. During the session, Daoudi highlighted several pressing issues, including the management of fishing ports, the vital need for a clear physical separation between fishing vessels and pleasure boats, and concerns related to social protection for professionals, retirement benefits, and training initiatives.

Minister Badani stressed the sector’s commitment to fully implementing the President’s directives aimed at enhancing the socio-professional conditions of fishermen. This commitment involves close coordination with various partner sectors to ensure the successful achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the fishing industry.

Recent Incentive Measures

Additionally, the Minister recalled the recent incentive measures introduced to support fishermen. Notably, the decision to permit the importation of ship engines that are less than five years old, as outlined in the 2024 finance law, is a significant step toward addressing the challenges faced by many fishermen and shipowners. This initiative is particularly crucial in light of the frequent mechanical failures encountered with older vessels. Furthermore, the importation of fishing vessels under five years old for deep-sea fishing has also been authorized.

Through these efforts, the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to cultivate a more sustainable and productive fishing sector that not only benefits the professionals directly involved but also contributes positively to the broader economy. By prioritizing the needs of fishermen and implementing strategic measures, the ministry seeks to ensure a thriving and resilient fishing community in Algeria.
