Algeria Committed to Strengthening Cooperation with the African Union to Promote Women’s Empowerment and Protection

Algiers, Algeria– Tuesday, July 29, 2025 |  In a step reaffirming Algeria’s continued commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women across the African continent, Minister of National Solidarity, Family and Women’s Affairs, Soraya Mouloudji, received on Monday in Algiers Ms. Prudence Ngwenya, Director of the Women, Gender and Youth Department at the African Union Commission (AUC).

According to a statement released by the Ministry, the meeting offered an opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue regarding the prospects of deepening cooperation between the Algerian ministry and the AUC. Discussions focused particularly on strategic avenues for strengthening joint efforts in the field of women’s empowerment and protection.

The foundation of this cooperation is grounded in the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU-CEVAWG), described as a “comprehensive legal instrument designed to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls on the continent.” So far, the Convention has been ratified by six African nations, and Algeria’s potential engagement with its provisions was a key topic of discussion.

During the meeting, Ms. Ngwenya expressed her strong desire to highlight and share Algeria’s successful experiences with other African countries, particularly in light of the robust programmes and mechanisms the Algerian government has implemented for the benefit of women, adolescent girls, and youth. She praised Algeria’s leadership in social protection policies and called for its active participation in the upcoming Specialized Technical Session, scheduled for November in Kampala, Uganda. This session aims to foster dialogue, generate cooperation opportunities, and debate strategies related to gender and youth empowerment.

For her part, Minister Mouloudji emphasized that Algeria, as a founding member of the African Union, remains deeply committed to enhancing the role and influence of all AU bodies. She reiterated her ministry’s full readiness to expand cooperation with the AUC in all domains aligned with its mandate and confirmed Algeria’s willingness to actively participate in initiatives and events spearheaded by the continental institution.
