Algeria, Congo Deepen Energy Education Ties: IAP, SNPC Sign Landmark Agreement to Train Future Petroleum Engineers

The partnership between Sonatrach’s Algerian Petroleum Institute and Congo’s SNPC reflects a bold step toward African energy self-sufficiency through education, joint innovation, and sustainable development.

Algiers, Algeria | June 26th, 2025 — In a major leap toward reinforcing African energy cooperation through education and innovation, the Algerian Petroleum Institute (IAP), under the aegis of national energy giant Sonatrach, has signed a pivotal agreement with the Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo (SNPC) to provide engineering training to 19 Congolese students at the University of M’Hamed Bougara of Boumerdès.

The signing ceremony, held on the sidelines of the 12th edition of Sonatrach’s Scientific and Technical Days (JST12) under the theme “Energies of Technological Innovation,” was attended by SNPC’s Director General Maixent Raoul Ominga and Sonatrach CEO Rachid Hachichi. The new agreement consolidates an already robust relationship between Algeria and Congo in the energy sector.

The selected Congolese students will undertake a comprehensive academic and practical training program in hydrocarbon specialties. While the academic curriculum will be delivered at the Boumerdès University, the hands-on industrial training will be conducted at various Sonatrach complexes, under the supervision and technical guidance of the IAP.

As part of the agreement, the IAP will facilitate all administrative procedures related to student registration and integration for the 2025–2026 academic year, ensuring a smooth educational transition and an optimal learning environment for the future petroleum engineers.

This cooperation is not new. It builds on the framework agreement signed between Sonatrach and SNPC in November 2023, which has already benefited 49 Congolese technical agents who underwent specialized training, certifications, and industrial internships at Algerian energy sites. The fruitful partnership has also paved the way for technical assistance in the modernization of CORAF, the Congolese oil refining company, through a joint project team.

“This is more than a training agreement—it’s a strategic partnership rooted in a shared African vision of technological empowerment and energy sovereignty,” said Ominga. “It embodies the synergy between two national companies dedicated to developing African energy talents.”
