Algeria Consolidates Its African Presence Through Clear Strategy, Active Diplomacy

๐๐ต๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป๐ผ โ ๐๐ช๐ท๐พ๐ช๐ป๐ ๐๐๐๐ โย ย Throughout 2025, Algerian diplomacy, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and in strict adherence to his strategic orientations, played a leading and influential role within the African Union (AU). Algeria succeeded in consolidating its diplomatic presence on the continent by relying on deeply rooted historical principles and adopting a constructive, forward-looking approach aimed primarily at defending Africaโs interests, strengthening its sovereignty, and asserting its position on the international stage in line with evolving continental and global challenges.
In this context, Algeria pursued sustained efforts to safeguard the interests of the African continent and its peoples, efforts that materialized in a series of tangible achievements within the continental organization. In February 2025, Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi was elected Vice-President of the African Union Commission, an achievement that attests to Algeriaโs stature and influence in Africa and reflects the confidence of AU member states in Algeriaโs prudent and visionary leadership.
During the work of the African Union, Algerian diplomacy also played a decisive role in supporting the adoption of the statute of the African Continental Civilian Capacity Mechanism for Disaster Preparedness and Response, an initiative proposed by the President of the Republic. It further contributed to the ratification of Algeriaโs proposal to dedicate an African Day to the commemoration of African martyrs and victims of slavery, the transatlantic slave trade, colonialism, and apartheid, in addition to the adoption of the Oran Declaration issued from the 2024 African Youth Forum.
In line with a clear and transparent vision aimed at contributing effectively to African Union resolutions on peace and security, Algeria secured a seat on the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) for a three-year term (2025โ2028). This diplomatic success reflects the high esteem consistently enjoyed by Algerian diplomacy among African states, recognizing Algeria as a force for peace grounded in historical principles and steadfast in the defense of just causes, while working to entrench stability across the continent.
Within the same framework, and during its presidency of the Peace and Security Council in August, under the leadership of Ambassador Mohamed Khaled, Permanent Representative of Algeria to the AU, Algeria assumed responsibility for advancing initiatives aligned with political and security priorities and for promoting African solutions to African crises, based on a carefully structured agenda.
Among the most notable initiatives were the activation of the PSC sub-committee on counter-terrorism, the institutionalization of regular ambassador-level meetings between the PSC and the African members of the UN Security Council (A3), and the establishment of a continental security map. This mechanism serves as a proactive and preventive decision-support tool, enabling continuous assessment of threats and risks and ensuring rapid responses to contain them and prevent escalation across Africa.
In recognition of Algeriaโs role in promoting human rights on the continent, Ms. Chafika Bensaoula was elected Vice-President of the African Court on Human and Peoplesโ Rights, while Ms. Sabrina Kahar was elected Chairperson of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. These appointments further confirm Algeriaโs standing within the African space and its unwavering commitment to strengthening human rights principles and values at both continental and international levels.
In the same vein, Ms. Selma Sassi-Safer, Commissioner at the African Commission on Human and Peoplesโ Rights, Ms. Chafika Bensaoula, Judge at the African Court on Human and Peoplesโ Rights, and Ms. Samia Bourouba, member of the African Union Commission on International Law, were appointed members of the African Commission on Reparations, reinforcing Algeriaโs active contribution to justice and historical accountability.
As part of its continental diplomatic activity, Algeria experienced exceptional momentum in 2025, notably through hosting, in September, the fourth edition of the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF 2025), which recorded unprecedented success in terms of participation and outcomes. Algeria also hosted, in December, the 12th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa (Oran Process), marked by record ministerial participation and, for the first time, the notable presence of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission.
This event coincided with the organization of the International Conference on the Crimes of Colonialism, which culminated in the adoption of the โAlgiers Declaration,โ set to be submitted for adoption at the African Union Summit scheduled for February 2026. Additionally, Algeria further strengthened its leadership role in innovation by organizing the fourth edition of the African Start-up Conference in December, reaffirming its commitment to economic transformation and youth-driven development across the continent.
