Algeria, Cuba Celebrate 62 Years of Exemplary Medical Solidarity

Algiers, Algeria | May 24th, 2025 — In a powerful testament to enduring solidarity and internationalist values, Algeria and Cuba have commemorated the 62nd anniversary of their historic medical cooperation—an emblematic alliance that continues to serve as a beacon of humanitarian partnership across continents.

Speaking from Djelfa during a ceremony organized by the Cuban Embassy in Algeria at the Institute of Paramedical Training, Cuban Ambassador Héctor Igarza Cabrera hailed the unwavering commitment of Cuba to Algeria’s public health system, a commitment that began in 1963 and remains vibrantly alive to this day.

“Our medical cooperation with Algeria, which began with the arrival of 50 Cuban specialists in 1963, now includes more than 900 healthcare professionals spread across several wilayas, delivering critical medical services in multiple specialties,” stated Ambassador Cabrera. “This enduring cooperation reflects the deep and unshakeable friendship that unites our two nations.”

The ceremony was attended by senior civil and military officials, local authorities, and numerous Cuban medical personnel deployed in the southern wilayas of Djelfa, Ouargla, and El Oued. The event underscored the depth of bilateral ties and the role of medical diplomacy as a pillar of this strategic partnership.

The Cuban ambassador further praised Algeria’s historical role in championing liberation movements across the Global South, stating: “Algeria played a decisive role in supporting the liberation struggles of nations oppressed by colonialism and apartheid. Today, it remains steadfast in its solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination.”

Echoing this sentiment, Rolando Belloto, head of the Cuban medical mission in Algeria, emphasized the spiritual and humanitarian foundations of this longstanding partnership: “Despite the vast ocean and cultural differences that separate our nations—Cuba in the Caribbean and Algeria in North Africa—a profound bond of solidarity has united us for more than six decades.”

Cuban healthcare professionals in Algeria, often referred to as members of the “White Army,” expressed immense pride in their mission. A representative of the Cuban doctors declared: “We feel honored to be part of this noble service. Our sense of duty and professional commitment remains unwavering. We are proud ambassadors of Cuban medicine.”

The Wali of Djelfa also lauded the extraordinary dedication of the Cuban medical teams, describing their contribution as a “living testament to the strength of Algerian-Cuban friendship, as evident in the exceptional quality of care provided by these devoted professionals, who deserve our utmost recognition and gratitude.”

During the celebration, several Cuban health professionals working in ophthalmology units across Béchar, El Oued, Djelfa, and Ouargla were honored for their excellence and service. The ceremony featured moving tributes and a lively performance of Cuban traditional songs, blending cultural celebration with diplomatic homage.

Mutual Support and Diplomatic Ties

The Algeria-Cuba partnership extends beyond healthcare. During Algeria’s struggle for independence, Cuba provided not only medical assistance but also military support, including the deployment of armored vehicles and troops. In return, Algeria has consistently supported Cuba in international forums, advocating against the U.S. embargo and promoting Cuba’s integration into global institutions.

This mutual support has fostered a robust diplomatic relationship, characterized by shared values and collaborative efforts in various sectors, including education, culture, and technology.
